So I finally saved up and bought a Sony camera (the a6400 I think?) but it only came with this tiny flat lens and I have no idea what Im doing lol. Im going on a big trip to Kyoto in like three weeks and I really want to get some good shots of the temples and maybe some street food without having to carry a bunch of heavy glass around or keep switching things out because I know I'll probably drop something if I try to change lenses in the middle of a crowd.

My budget is kind of tight after buying the actual camera so I can probably only spend like $700 or maybe $900 if I really stretch it. I keep seeing words like focal length and aperture and honestly my brain just turns to mush when I look at the specs. I just want one lens that can zoom in pretty far but also take pictures of a whole building or a landscape without me having to stand like a mile away. Is that even possible? I heard someone mention a 24-70 or something like that but then someone else said those are for full frame and I dont even know if mine is that?

Sorry if this is a really basic question but does anyone have a recommendation for just one good zoom lens that works for pretty much everything and fits on a Sony?

Last time I went to Kyoto, the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS was a total lifesaver. Being at Fushimi Inari when it was packed made me realize how risky changing lenses can be... honestly wouldve dropped something. This lens caught the shrines and distant city views perfectly. Its safe and reliable. TL;DR: Stick with the 18-135mm for a stress-free trip.

Just saw this pop up. After dragging a heavy bag of lenses through Osaka years ago, I learned my lesson the hard way... switching gear in a crowd is just asking for a disaster. Since the a6400 has a smaller sensor, those 24-70mm lenses people mention wont be wide enough for tight streets. In my experience, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is the gold standard for your setup. Tbh, it stays on my camera 90 percent of the time.

  • The f/2.8 aperture is constant. This is a lifesaver inside dark temples where cheaper lenses fail.
  • It has built-in stabilization, so evening food shots stay sharp even without a tripod. It fits your budget and covers everything from wide landscapes to zoomed-in shots. Youll never have to risk dropping anything.

Yes, it is absolutely possible and I love the challenge of finding the perfect one-lens setup! The tech in these modern optics is just incredible. Reliability is everything when you are thousands of miles from home. I remember shooting at Kiyomizu-dera and being so glad I had a gear setup that wouldnt fail me in the heat... it was incredible! Since you have an APS-C sensor, we need to look at the effective focal length carefully because that full-frame stuff wont work the same for you. To really nail down the data for you, are you planning on shooting a lot of video of the food vendors, or are you strictly sticking to stills? Also, do you prioritize having a constant aperture for low light shots, or is having a massive zoom range more important for those far-away temple details?
