whats the best all around zoom lens for a sony e-mount camera cause i just bought an a7iii off ebay and it didnt come with anything? sorry if this is like a super basic question but i have no idea where to start and honestly looking at all the options is making my head spin lol. i basically want one lens that can do everything because i dont want to be swapping them out all the time especially since im going on a trip to florida next month to visit family and i want to take nice pictures of the kids and also some shots of the beach.

my budget is around 700 or 800 bucks tops because the camera already cost me a fortune. i see all these numbers like 24-70 or 28-200 and i dont really get what they mean for the actual picture like does a bigger number mean it zooms in more? i just want something that looks sharp and works for everything from landscapes to portraits of my dog. if anyone has a recommendation for a beginner who is totally lost that would be great because i feel like im drowning in technical specs right now...

tbh i have been super satisfied with the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lately. it works well for landscapes and zooming in on the kids because that 200mm number means it magnifies a ton. it fits your budget too! quick tip: the lower f/2.8 number at the wide end is great for sunset beach shots when the light starts getting low. no complaints here.

Regarding what #1 said about "tbh i have been super satisfied with the..." - that lens is okay, but unfortunately i had issues with the autofocus hunting. It was not as good as expected for moving kids.

Basically the first number (like 28) is how wide the view is for landscapes, and the second (70 or 200) is how much it zooms in. Bigger second number = more zoom. For your budget, the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary is absolutely fantastic! It is super compact which is a lifesaver when youre chasing kids around or walking on the beach. I love how light it is... honestly feels like nothing on the camera compared to some of those heavy pro lenses. It is basically the perfect travel lens tbh. Another killer option if you want a bit more zoom range is looking for a used Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2. You can usually snag one for around $700 if you shop around online. Both have that f/2.8 aperture which is what gives you those beautiful blurry backgrounds for portraits of your dog or the family. It makes such a huge difference compared to the basic kit lenses, youll love the results! Florida is gonna be great for photos, enjoy the trip!!
