So ive been shooting with my A7III for like five years now and im usually a prime lens snob but im heading to Japan next month for a two week trek across Hokkaido and honestly I dont want to be swapping lenses in the snow. I normally pack my 35mm and 85mm but carrying a heavy bag is gonna kill my back this time. I need that one do it all lens that doesnt compromise too much on corner sharpness or speed since i do a lot of street stuff at night. Budget is around $1200 max. Should I just bite the bullet on the Sony 24-105 G or is there something newer like the Tamron 28-200 that actually holds up for pro work?
> Should I just bite the bullet on the Sony 24-105 G or is there something newer Jumping in because Hokkaido in winter is literally a dream! You're gonna have such a blast with those snowy landscapes, honestly. Quick question tho, are you planning on shooting a lot of wide vistas or strictly sticking to the street stuff? That 24mm vs 28mm starting point makes a massive difference when you're trying to capture the scale of the mountains up there. The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS might feel a bit slow for night work despite the stabilization. I'd look at the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art instead. It stays under budget and that f/2.8 is fantastic for low light. Plus the weather sealing is solid for the snow! Quick tips for the cold:
- Keep spare batteries in an inside pocket near your body heat.
- Dont bring cold gear straight into a warm room to avoid condensation.
> Should I just bite the bullet on the Sony 24-105 G Wait, if youre doing street at night in Hokkaido, that f/4 on the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS might really bum you out... sun drops at 4pm there. Maybe look at the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 instead. Its much lighter and saves your back. Night street shots really need f/2.8. TL;DR: Stick with f/2.8 glass so you dont get buried in ISO noise.
You seriously gotta check out the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD! I love mine so much because it is way cheaper than the Sony options but still gives you f/2.8 for street stuff at night, ngl. It is basically the ultimate budget travel lens and super light too, tbh. Definitely save that extra money for more sushi while youre in Japan!
Bookmarked, thanks!
