So I'm trying to prep for this gallery exhibit I've got coming up in Chicago next month and I'm honestly about to pull my hair out. I'm using an A7R V so I need glass that can actually handle 61 megapixels without looking like mush when I blow these prints up to like 40 inches. I've been reading reviews for weeks and I'm more confused now than when I started. I saw that the Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM is supposed to be the gold standard for sharpness but then I'm seeing guys on YouTube saying the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art actually beats it in the corners. Like how am I supposed to know who to trust?
DXOMARK has these charts that make sense but then real world tests show the 35mm GM might be sharper edge-to-edge for my architectural shots and the 50mm has some weird fringing issues according to some people. My budget is roughly $2,200 which is a lot of money to drop on something that might not be the absolute peak performer and I dont want to regret it later. I just want the crispest possible image quality for this specific body without any compromise.
What is actually the sharpest prime lens for the Sony E-mount system right now?
- I used a pre-owned Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS for a high-res project.
- It delivers surgical edge-to-edge clarity on 61MP sensors for half the GM price.
- Unfortunately, many hyped primes are not as good as expected on high-res sensors.
- Watch for field curvature ruining those architectural edges.
- Are you shooting wide open or stopped down?
