What is the one prime lens that every single person with a Sony Alpha camera needs to buy? I just got an a7iv and honestly the kit lens is making me want to throw the whole thing out the window because everything is so blurry and dark and I dont understand why I spent so much money. I keep hearing about prime lenses but there are a million options and the numbers like f/1.8 or whatever just confuse me.
I mostly want to take pictures of my kids in the yard and some portraits for our Florida trip next month. My budget is $500 max since I already overspent on the camera body. I have no idea where to start...
Man, that kit lens is basically a paperweight once it gets dark, so i totally get the frustration. Since youre on a budget, you might want to consider starting with a 50mm lens. Basically, that f/1.8 number tells you how wide the lens opens. A smaller number means more light hits the sensor, so your photos wont be so dark and grainy even inside.
- The f/1.8 aperture is what gives you those professional blurry backgrounds for portraits.
- Primes are usually much sharper because they dont have all the moving glass of a zoom.
- Just make sure you realize you cant zoom anymore... you gotta move your body to frame the shot! For your Florida trip, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 is the cheapest way to get results that actually look like you spent money on a camera. Be careful tho, the focus is a bit slow for hyper kids. If you can find a deal on the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8, it is way faster and wider for the yard.
Stumbled upon this today. If youre taking the kids to Florida, 50mm might feel a bit tight. In my experience, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 is way more versatile for travel and yard shots. That f/1.8 aperture lets you use faster shutter speeds so the kids arent just a blur. I usually check the Fred Miranda buy/sell boards for used gear to save money. Youll find way better prices there.
Tbh Im not totally sold on those suggestions for a Florida trip. There was this one vacation where I brought a 50mm and missed all the scenery. I'm not 100% sure but someone told me wider glass is safer for beach shots.
- maybe check used gear sites
- be careful with lens weight
- make sure to check return policies iirc, youll want extra breathing room for kids because they move so fast.
Ngl I was so disappointed with the kit lens too when I first started out. It honestly makes the camera feel broken because everything is just dark and muddy indoors. I actually had some issues with the really cheap primes like the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 because the autofocus is kinda slow and noisy... I missed a ton of shots of my kids because it couldnt lock on fast enough. For your Florida trip and shooting in the yard, you should really look at the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8. Its a beast for the price and much more reliable for moving targets than the cheaper stuff. Basically, that f/1.8 number means the lens can stay open wider to let in light, which lets you use a faster shutter speed so your kids wont be a blurry mess anymore. Plus it gives you those really professional looking backgrounds for your portraits. You can usually find one for under $500 if you check used sites like MPB or KEH. It might feel a bit zoomed in compared to what you have now, but for outdoor play and vacation photos, it is a massive upgrade over that kit lens.
