Which prime lens should I buy for a Sony E-mount camera?

So I just got this Sony camera—I think it’s the a6400 or something like that—and I’m super lost with all the lens stuff. I’m currently using the one that came in the box but honestly the pictures look kinda flat? Like they don’t have that professional blurry background that I see on Instagram. People keep telling me I need a prime lens but I’m totally new to this so please bear with me if this is a stupid question lol.

I have a budget of maybe $400 or $500 because I spent way too much on the actual camera already. I’m going to my sisters wedding in Nashville next month so I really want to get something before then so I can practice. My logic was that I should just get the one with the highest number because that sounds better? But then I read that a 50mm lens is different on my camera than on a full frame camera which I dont even think I have. It’s all so confusing and I feel like I’m going in circles.

I was looking at the Sony 35mm and the 50mm ones online. Someone told me the 50mm is the best for portraits but then I saw a video saying that on my type of camera it's actually like an 85mm and I would have to stand really far back to take a picture of someone sitting across a table from me. Is that true? I just want something that makes people look good and works well when the lights are a bit low since the wedding reception is gonna be indoors and I dont want to use that annoying pop-up flash.

I also saw some brands like Sigma which are cheaper but I don't know if they're allowed to go on a Sony camera or if it'll break something. Do I have to stick with the Sony brand? Basically I just want one lens that I can leave on the camera all the time that makes everything look pro without me having to zoom. What do you guys think is the easiest one for a total beginner who has no clue what they're doing...

Grab the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary! Its amazing for low light and that pro blurry look. Third-party lenses are totally safe and this one is literal magic for weddings!

Just saw this thread and honestly you're gonna love having a prime lens. I've been really happy with the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS on my a6400 and it fits your budget perfectly. It usually goes for around $450 and works well for that blurry look youre after. Heres why I think its the best pick for your sisters wedding:

  • It has Optical Steady Shot (OSS) which helps keep things sharp when the lights get low.
  • The f/1.8 aperture lets in a ton of light compared to your kit lens.
  • 35mm on your camera is like 52.5mm on full frame, which is basically the gold standard. Since your camera doesnt have built-in stabilization (IBIS), having OSS in the lens is a huge deal. I've had zero complaints with the autofocus speed either... its super snappy for catching candid moments during the reception. Honestly, youll be shocked at the difference.

Yeah you are spot on about the 50mm being like an 85mm on your a6400. Honestly its kinda frustrating when you first start out because everyone says to get a 50mm but then you realize you are basically pinned against the wall just to get a decent headshot. I have had issues with that exact setup in tight indoor spaces before and unfortunately it is just not as good as expected for general use. It is definitely true that you will be backing up a lot at that wedding reception if you go that route. That said, dont worry about breaking your camera with other brands. Most modern third party stuff works perfectly fine these days. I am glad you are looking into this now tho because that kit lens is definitely gonna let you down in low light. If you need more help picking a specific one after you look at a few more videos just let me know, I am around to help.
