I just got this Sony camera

  • I think its the a6400 - and it came with a lens that zooms but my friend said I need a prime lens if I want that really blurry background look for my trip to Tokyo next month. Im so confused because there are so many numbers like 35mm or 50mm and I dont know what that actually means for the photo. My logic was that a bigger number is better? But then someone said 35 is wider for street stuff.

I have about 400 dollars saved and I really dont want to buy the wrong thing. Sorry if this is a dumb question but which one is better for pictures of people and buildings...

Been thinking about your trip and I have been extremely happy with a wider prime. It works well for those massive Tokyo buildings.

  • Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary handles low light beautifully.
  • No complaints about the sharpness. Higher numbers are like binoculars, so 16mm is better for tight streets. It fits your budget and still gives you plenty of that blurry background look... definitely worth it. You wont have to walk across the street just to fit a temple in.

Grab the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E. Its basically the best street lens for your camera and smaller numbers are actually wider.

  • 30mm fits the buildings
  • f/1.4 gives you blurry backgrounds

I had issues with chromatic aberration on that Sigma. Are you shooting portraits or buildings mostly?
