Which Sony prime lens offers the sharpest image quality today?

Ive been obsessing over lens charts for weeks trying to pick a new prime for my A7R V. I have a huge wedding shoot in Seattle next month and the couple wants massive prints so I need absolute peak performance. I keep seeing the 50mm f1.2 GM mentioned as the sharpest thing ever but then people on some forums swear the 135mm f1.8 GM actually beats it in the corners.

Then theres the 35mm GM which some say is more consistent across the whole frame... it's honestly getting a bit confusing because the lab tests dont always match the real-world samples I see. My budget is around 2k. Which Sony prime actually delivers the most clinical, sharpest image quality out there today?

If you are hunting for the absolute peak of clinical sharpness for those A7R V files, the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM is honestly the one to beat. I have spent way too many hours looking at Imatest results and technical teardowns, and that lens is basically the benchmark for the whole system. Its stupidly sharp. Even wide open at f1.8, the corner-to-corner performance is insane, which is exactly what you need for those massive prints the couple wants. The Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM is a very close second tho. For a wedding, it might be the more practical choice because 135mm can be a bit tight depending on the venue. The 50mm center sharpness is incredible, but if you look at the raw data for the corners, the 135mm edges it out slightly in terms of total sensor uniformity. It just handles those 61 megapixels like its nothing. If you want something wider, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is great but it isnt quite as clinical as the other two. Its got a bit more character and slightly less micro-contrast at the edges. Since you have a 2k budget, my money is on the 135mm for pure technical resolution. Just make sure you have enough room to back up in Seattle... those city streets can get narrow.

  • Honestly, dont overthink it and get the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM! Its super sharp, lighter, and cheaper. Truly amazing for weddings!

> I keep seeing the 50mm f1.2 GM mentioned as the sharpest thing ever I really wanted to love that one but unfortunately it was a bit of a letdown. Had some issues with field curvature that made my corners look messy on high-res sensors. It definitely wasnt as good as expected for the price tag. I eventually switched to the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for my wedding work because the micro-contrast felt more consistent for massive prints... lab charts dont show everything.
