What is the best budget lens I can pick up for my Canon 90D to shoot birds without breaking the bank? I have been shooting for a few years now and I really love the crop factor on the 90D, but honestly, my current kit lens just isnt cutting it for backyard wildlife. I keep trying to get decent shots of the hawks around my place here in suburban Ohio, but the glass just loses all its sharpness at the long end and the autofocus is hunting way too much.

Im kinda freaking out because I have a trip to a local nature preserve coming up in about three weeks and I really dont want to show up with gear that cant handle the distance. My budget is tight right now, probably around 500 to 600 bucks tops. Should I look for a used 70-300mm IS II USM or is there something else I should be hunting for on the used market? Ive heard mixed things about third party lenses but Im getting desperate to get some reach without needing a second mortgage. Should I just save up longer or is there something reliable that wont make me regret the purchase immediately?

Honestly, look for a used Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM. The Nano USM focus is significantly faster than the old stuff, making it perfect for erratic birds.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I would honestly stick with the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. It is super sharp, affordable, and way more reliable for your trip!

If you want more reach on a budget, a used Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD is honestly your best bet for birds, even if it pushes the budget slightly.
