Sony’s photo gallery for the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS (Amazon/B&H Photo Video) has 10 official sample images: wildlife, a canoe slalom race, a train, a waterfall and a sunset. Sony lists the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure mode and white balance for each one. All are at 400mm and F4.5. Sony does not name the camera or the photographers.
Wildlife
Puffins, foxes, a squirrel and a baboon with its young, with shutter speeds from 1/400 s to 1/2500 s. The flying puffin is the fastest frame in the group, at 1/2500 s and ISO 1600, and the squirrel and fox frames are at ISO 800.

Action and landscape
The two canoe frames show the lens at 1/2000 s and 1/2500 s. The train and waterfall images are long-distance shots, the train at 1/2000 s and the waterfall at 1/800 s. The sunset is the one low-ISO frame, at ISO 100 and 1/1000 s.

What to make of them
- These are Sony’s picks. There is no camera body, distance or editing information, so they say little about corner sharpness or autofocus performance.
- Everything is at F4.5, the widest aperture. Sony’s table shows that some frames were shot in aperture priority with negative exposure compensation (-0.7 EV and -1.3 EV on the waterfall and the train), and others in manual exposure.
- For independent shots, DPReview’s gallery was shot on an a7 V, mostly at the Oregon Zoo with a handful from Montana, and has JPEG and RAW downloads. DPReview describes the lens as a 994 g super-telephoto aimed at wildlife and sports, driven by two XD linear motors, and priced at about $2,700.
