What is the absolute best portrait lens for my Canon R50 that wont break the bank? Im planning to shoot some graduation photos for my cousin in about three weeks so I really need something soon. Ive been looking at the RF 50mm f/1.8 but a few forums mentioned the crop factor on the R50 makes it a bit tight for indoor shoots. Then I saw people recommending the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 but that price tag is a bit higher than I wanted to spend right now, especially since Im in the UK and everything seems way more expensive here. Is the 50mm really too long for small rooms or should I just suck it up and go for it?
^ This. Also, if you really need to save cash, grab the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM. It is super sharp and works fine if you just get creative with room angles.
@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, if you find the 50mm too tight, you should check out the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM. It is a bit more expensive than the nifty fifty, but it is way more versatile indoors. I have been using it on my R10 and am super satisfied with the results. You get that wider angle for tight spots and the macro capability is just a nice bonus for detail shots.

If you have the budget, the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is objectively better for portraits, but since you are in the UK and funds are tight, it might be a stretch. Unfortunately, the cheaper Canon options just arent as good as expected for tight spaces. Have you looked for a used Canon RF-S 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM instead? It gives you a bit more breathing room for group shots while still being sharp. Dont rush into the 50mm if you feel you will regret it, maybe check marketplace sites for a deal.
