Ive been shooting with my R8 for about six months now, mostly street photography and some portraits, and honestly I love the sensor but Im stuck with the kit lens which is just killing me in low light. I really need something sharper and faster for an upcoming trip to Chicago in three weeks. Im on a strict budget of like 400 bucks max. Should I go for the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM even though people say the focus motor is kinda loud, or is there something else I should look at? Im getting a bit anxious about finding something decent before I leave...

Honestly, just grab the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM. I have been using it on my R series body for a while now and honestly have no complaints. It works well for street stuff and portraits. The focus motor isnt that bad at all, definitely not loud enough to ruin a trip. For under 200 bucks, it is a solid, reliable choice that gets the job done.

Building on the earlier suggestion, its clear youve got two solid camps here. You have folks pushing for the native Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for its size and price, and others warning you about potential firmware headaches with third-party stuff. Honestly, if you want something that just works for Chicago without stressing about compatibility, native is the way to go. Here is my two cents after using the system for a while:

  • The RF 50mm is super compact, making it perfect for street photography where you dont want to look like a pro with a massive lens.
  • If you really want a different focal length for that city vibe, keep an eye out for a used Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM if you can find one under your budget, as it is great for wide architecture shots.
  • Stick to native glass like the ones mentioned so you dont have to worry about focus hunting or firmware issues right before your flight. Since you are heading out in three weeks, dont overthink it. The 50mm is a classic for a reason and itll handle those evening street shots way better than your kit lens ever could. Just grab it, test the AF in low light for a day or two around your neighborhood, and you'll be set. Have an awesome time in Chicago, you're gonna love how the R8 sensor handles the city lights!

Honestly, skip the adapters if you can. Just be careful with third-party glass since firmware updates can sometimes brick them. Stick to native glass for your trip, its way safer.

^ This. Also, honestly, stop overthinking it before your trip. Ive spent years testing gear and at the end of the day, reliability is all that matters when you are traveling. If you are still really torn on the performance, there is a super detailed comparison video on YouTube if you just search for RF 50mm vs kit lens low light test. It basically shows everything you need to know about the sharpness difference. Honestly, just look up some sample galleries on Flickr or check the official Canon website to see the spec sheets side-by-side. Trying to find the perfect answer on a forum when you are three weeks out is just gonna stress you out more. Just grab something native and go shoot.
