I would like to know which Canon lens would be the most suitable for this purpose. I am considering factors such as focal length, aperture, and overall image quality.

What specific Canon lens would you recommend for capturing sharp, detailed images of the moon? I would greatly appreciate any insights from experienced astrophotographers or Canon enthusiasts who have successfully photographed the moon.

You can't go wrong with the Canon RF 600mm F11 IS STM or RF 800mm F11 IS STM lenses. They give you an incredibly long reach plus have built-in stabilization. Just make sure to use a sturdy tripod for sharpness. The trade off is that they have fixed apertures at f/11 so less light gathering ability.

Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L USM III is often regarded as one of the best prime lenses for moon photography. Its long focal length allows for impressive close-ups of the moon's surface details, and its L-series quality ensures sharp images with excellent contrast.

RF 1200mm f/8L - If you don't mind the price.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM or Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is OK.

Quick reply while I'm thinking about it... the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM has made me super happy. It's probably the safest bet if you dont want to blow a huge budget on a hobby you're just starting. I was worried it wouldn't be enough reach at first, but it works well for getting those clear crater details. Looking into older lenses to save money is tempting, but using the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R plus an old EF lens felt a bit risky for a beginner like me. Didn't want to deal with potential compatibility glitches or autofocus issues. Sticking with the native RF lens was a much safer choice and im really satisfied with the results. If you need any tips on settings that worked for me, let me know!

Another great option to consider is the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM zoom lens. While not quite as long as the 800mm prime, the 500mm maximum focal length still provides significant reach for moon shots. And the versatile zoom range allows you to frame the moon along with foreground elements if desired. As an L-series lens, the optical quality and construction are top-notch. The fast and accurate autofocus is also beneficial for keeping the moon sharp. Overall it's one of the best super-telephoto zooms available for the RF system and works very well for lunar imaging.

I'd highly recommend the Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM. It's relatively affordable for such a long focal length and provides excellent reach for capturing detailed shots of the moon. The fixed f/11 aperture isn't an issue for moon shots since you'll be stopping down anyway. The built-in image stabilization is a nice bonus too.
