I recently got my hands on the new Canon EOS R8, and I'm super excited to start shooting with it! However, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the lens options available for this camera. I'm primarily interested in portrait and landscape photography, but I also want to experiment with some street photography.

Could anyone recommend some versatile lenses that would work well with the Canon EOS R8? I'm open to both native RF mount lenses and adapted EF lenses. Ideally, I'd like a mix of prime and zoom lenses to cover different focal lengths.

Any suggestions or personal experiences with lenses on the EOS R8 would be greatly appreciated!

I highly recommended Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM as one of the best zoom lenses  and Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM as one of the best prime lenses for your Canon EOS R8

These lenses provide a good mix of versatility and performance for various photography styles.

For Canon EOS R8, a popular prime lens is  Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L. This lens is known for its excellent optical quality, wide aperture, and versatility, making it ideal for portraits and low-light photography.

For a zoom lens, Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is often regarded as one of the best options. This lens provides a versatile focal length range, high image quality, and a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range, making it great for a variety of shooting situations.

If you're looking for the best lenses to pair with your new Canon EOS R8, here are some great options to consider:

  1. Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM: This compact and lightweight kit lens is a great all-around option. Despite its modest specs, it delivers good image quality and effective stabilization in a super-small package that balances well on the R8. Perfect for everyday shooting.

  2. Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM: For more reach, this versatile zoom offers an impressive range and surprisingly sharp images. The  aperture is compensated by the 5-stop IS. A great value option for travel and general use.

  3. Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM: This affordable ultra-wide zoom is ideal for landscapes, interiors, and travel. It's compact, stabilized, and performs well above its price point.

  4. Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM: Take advantage of the R8's fast burst speeds and AF with this powerful, yet portable super-telephoto zoom. Great for casual wildlife and sports shooting.

  5. Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM: Don't let the fixed  aperture fool you - this unique prime delivers stunning reach in a relatively compact, lightweight, and affordable package. Excellent for birding and wildlife.

  6. Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM: A fantastic choice for street photography, low-light shooting, and even close-up work thanks to its 0.5x macro capability. Fast, stabilized, and affordable.

  7. Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM: This "nifty fifty" is sharp, compact, and incredibly value-priced. A must-have prime for any R8 owner.

  8. Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM: An incredibly versatile portrait and close-up lens, with beautiful background blur and stabilization. Lighter and more affordable than faster 85mm options.

No matter your needs or budget, there's an excellent native RF lens option for the Canon EOS R8. From compact zooms to unique primes, these lenses will help you get the most out of your new camera.

If you just got the EOS R8 and are looking for your first lens, I'd highly recommend the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM as an amazing all-around zoom. Some key advantages:

  • Really useful 24-105mm focal length range - covers wide angle to short telephoto
  • Constant f/4 aperture - fast enough for low light while keeping the size/weight down
  • L-series pro build quality, weather sealed, built like a tank
  • Rapid, silent autofocus and 5 stops of optical image stabilization
  • Produces tack sharp images with beautiful color and contrast

The 24-105 f/4L has long been a kit lens option with many Canon cameras because it's just such a versatile range in a relatively compact package. The RF version improves the optics even further. This lens paired with the EOS R8 makes for a killer combo as a high-end all-in-one setup. It's pricey, but well worth the investment and a great place to start in the RF system.

Honestly, I've been super satisfied keeping my R8 setup as light as possible. Everyone loves the L glass, but the non-L primes are where the real fun is for this specific body. I've had zero complaints with this combo for my street and portrait stuff:

  • Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM for those huge landscape shots or tight street corners.
  • Canon RF 85mm f/2.0 Macro IS STM for portraits; the bokeh is lovely and it doesnt break your neck or your wallet. Speaking of weight, I took this exact setup on a hike last weekend up near the gorge. I used to carry an old 5D and after three miles my shoulder would be screaming at me. With the R8, I actually forgot I had the camera around my neck half the time. I ended up getting totally distracted by this local bakery at the trailhead though... they had these sourdough donuts that were basically life-changing. I spent more time photographing the sugar glaze than the actual sunrise. Anyway, sticking to the small stuff makes the R8 way more enjoyable for long days.

Yo! Saw this earlier and just had to chime in because I am so stoked for you getting the R8! It is such a tiny beast of a camera! Regarding what #8 said about "Here are three excellent zoom lenses you can..."

  • I honestly have to respectfully disagree with going that heavy right out of the gate. I had a bit of a scare when I first got my setup:
  • I tried using my massive old lenses with an adapter since I already owned them.
  • The balance was completely wack and it felt super front-heavy.
  • I actually got really nervous about the physical strain on the mount because the R8 is so lightweight compared to those big zooms. Basically, I learned that for this specific body, sticking to native glass is a huge deal for reliability and just making sure everything stays safe and balanced. I ended up switching to much lighter stuff and my wrist is so much happier now. You really want to keep it compact so you actually enjoy carrying it around for street stuff!
