I'm delving into the production of music videos and currently in search of the best Canon RF lens to elevate my work. Having switched to the Canon mirrorless system recently, I'm eager to exploit its capabilities to the fullest, especially in low light environments and scenarios requiring exceptional image quality.

My primary concerns revolve around achieving cinematic quality with smooth focus transitions, sharpness, and a versatile focal range to adapt to various shooting conditions. The ability to handle dynamic scenes, from tight interior shots to expansive outdoor settings, without swapping lenses frequently is crucial. Furthermore, a lens that offers excellent stabilization and minimal focus breathing would be ideal, given the dynamic nature of music video production.

I've considered options like the Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM for its versatility and the RF 50mm F1.2 L USM for its outstanding low-light performance and depth of field control. However, I'm open to suggestions, especially from those with firsthand experience in music video production.

Could anyone share their insights or experiences on which Canon RF lens has worked best for them in music video contexts? Any advice on lenses that strike the best balance between quality, versatility, and cost-effectiveness would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I totally agree with the others about the 24-70mm being the workhorse here, but I really want to warn you about some compatibility and power issues I ran into lately. Last month I was on a set for a local indie band and we were using the Canon RF 28-70mm f2 L USM on an R5. Honestly, the image was gorgeous but we nearly fried the gimbal motors because that lens is such a tank. You really gotta be careful with your rig setup. Coming back to this, here are a few technical things to keep in mind:

  • Weight distribution is a massive deal. If you use the Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8 L IS USM, it is much easier to balance, but the f2 version is front-heavy and might not even clear the back arm on smaller gimbals.
  • Make sure your camera body supports the electronic focus breathing compensation feature. I noticed some jittery transitions on older firmware, so update that stuff immediately to get the most out of the glass.
  • Watch your filter sizes. If you are planning on using a matte box or variable NDs, the 82mm thread on these L-series zooms can be a pain if you only own 77mm gear. I would suggest maybe checking out the Canon RF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM if you ever do long handheld days... the f4 is a bit slow for dark clubs but the weight savings saved my back on a 12-hour shoot once.

Based on your requirements, here are a couple of lenses I would recommend:

  1. Canon RF 28-70mm F2 L USM

    • Versatile focal range covering wide to portrait lengths
    • Constant f/2 aperture for excellent low light performance and depth of field control
    • Tack sharp optics and beautiful rendering
    • Fast and accurate autofocus with minimal focus breathing
    • Ideal for dynamic scenes and quick lens changes
  2. Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM

    • Ultra-wide to wide focal range, perfect for establishing shots and expansive settings
    • f/2.8 aperture provides good low light capability and depth of field flexibility
    • Built-in image stabilization for smoother handheld shots
    • Quick and reliable autofocus
    • Excellent for interior shots and dramatic wide perspectives

While the RF 24-70mm F2.8 and RF 50mm F1.2 you mentioned are also great options, I feel the RF 28-70mm F2 provides a bit more versatility with its focal range and constant f/2 aperture. Paired with the RF 15-35mm, you'll have a solid kit covering ultra-wide to portrait focal lengths.

In my experience shooting music videos, having that f/2 or f/2.8 aperture is crucial for low light performance and achieving a cinematic look with shallow depth of field. The image stabilization in the RF 15-35mm is also a big plus for handheld shots or when using a gimbal.

Of course, the best lens choice will depend on your specific shooting style and needs. Renting or borrowing these lenses to test them out before purchasing could be a wise move.

To add to the point above: the 24-70 is definitely a workhorse, but after using these for a few years, I gotta warn you about the weight factor. If you're looking at the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, be careful with your wrists lol. It's a total beast and the image quality is basically prime-level, but it lacks built-in image stabilization. If you're doing a lot of handheld movement for music videos without a gimbal, it might be a bit shaky. On the other hand, the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is usually my go-to for these reasons:

  • It's way lighter for those 12-hour shoot days
  • The IS is a lifesaver for quick b-roll shots where you don't have time to rig up
  • It's a bit more budget-friendly, which lets you grab something like the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM for those tight, vibey close-ups Just make sure to check your gimbal's weight limit if you go for that f2 lens. I've seen motors struggle with it more than once... honestly, it's a workout. ngl my arms were killing me after the last shoot with it.

I'd highly recommend the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. This versatile zoom lens covers a very useful focal range, from wide-angle to short telephoto. The constant  aperture allows you to achieve a shallow depth of field for isolating your subject and creating a cinematic look. It also has great low-light performance. The built-in image stabilization helps get steady handheld shots. Overall, the RF 24-70mm is an excellent all-around lens for music video work.
