Anyone got some news and rumors about this lens ?
Regarding what #2 said about the price of the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z, i think $2999 is probably the floor for this new 70-200mm. Canon is really leaning into that hybrid Z line lately. From what we've seen, the rumors of a summer launch seem solid, though I wouldnt be surprised if shipping slips into autumn given how they handle flagship glass releases. In my experience, the biggest draw here is the internal zoom mechanism. If youre coming from the EF days, you probably miss that, but keep in mind it makes the lens much longer than the current Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. If you arent doing heavy video work with a Canon Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2, youre basically paying a five hundred dollar premium for a bigger, heavier lens. Honestly, unless you need that constant center of gravity for a gimbal, Id just look for a sale on the standard Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM or even the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM to save some serious cash. That extra stop of light is nice, but for most people, the f/4 is more than enough and way easier on the shoulder. Basically, dont buy the hype unless you actually need the power zoom contacts.
I would suggest being somewhat cautious before committing to that rumored $3,000 price tag for the new Z version. While the internal zoom is definitely a nice upgrade for video, we have to look at whether it is actually worth the premium for stills photographers. Honestly, the current Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is frequently available refurbished or on sale, and the optics are already incredible. If you are trying to be budget-conscious, you might want to consider the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM instead. It is significantly cheaper and much more portable for hiking or travel. Another very viable path is picking up a used Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM with an adapter. You can find those for a fraction of the cost of the RF Z lens, and the performance on the newer R bodies is still stellar. I'd just be careful about the total weight and length once you add the adapter... it definitely feels bulkier than the native RF options. Just something to keep in mind before dropping three grand.
The announcement is expected in June, after EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R1, RF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens. And the release date is expected in July to August.
tbh i am in the exact same boat and checking for updates every single morning. I have been using the current Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM for my outdoor work and while i am very satisfied with the results, the extending barrel design makes me a bit nervous regarding long-term reliability in dusty environments. I personally prefer a lens that maintains its physical length... it just feels more robust for my specific workflow. I have been quite happy with my current setup overall, but the peace of mind that comes with an internal zoom is really what i am waiting for. It is definitely a waiting game at this point, but i am right there with you.
Price ? The RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z is $2999, so expected RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS UMS Z to be the same price tag.
