So I finally upgraded to the R8 for a trip to Italy next month and honestly I am stuck on glass. My logic was to grab the 24-240mm for the reach but man it looks chunky on such a tiny body and I am worried about the edge sharpness. Then I looked at the 24-105 f4-7.1 and thought maybe? But that f/7.1 is just depressing for evening shots in the piazza. Ive been shooting for ten years and never had this much trouble picking a single walk-around lens. I want to keep it under $1100. Should I just bite the bullet on the f/4 L series or is there something I am missing that wont break my neck after walking Florence all day...
In my experience, walking ten miles a day through Florence makes you hate every extra gram in your bag. Ive tried many setups over the years and putting the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM on an R8 is basically like mounting a camera to a telescope... it just feels wrong and unbalanced. If you want that perfect one-lens setup for Italy, you should really just grab the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Heres why I think its the winner for you:
- Constant f/4 is a massive deal when you are shooting inside dim cathedrals or at dusk.
- The edge sharpness and contrast blow the non-L versions out of the water.
- Its built like a tank with weather sealing for those random rainstorms. Honestly, dont let the f/7.1 variable lens tempt you. Youll end up frustrated with the grain in your evening piazza shots. The L series is worth every penny of that budget for the color rendering alone. Let me know if you want to talk about bag options too!
