Ugh so I finally saved up and bought this Canon R6 because everyone said it was amazing but now I am just staring at it and I feel so stupid. I have no idea what I am doing. I went online to look for a lens and there are like a million choices and all these letters like RF and L and IS and USM and honestly my head is spinning. I just want one lens that I can leave on the camera all the time because I am going to Glacier National Park in three weeks and I really dont want to be carrying around a giant bag or fumbling with switching glass in the wind and dirt. I spent most of my money on the actual camera body so I only have like 700 or maybe 800 dollars left which I know might not be much for this hobby. Is there something that can take pictures of the mountains but also maybe like my dog or people at dinner? I keep seeing things about kit lenses but then people say they are bad and it makes me so frustrated because I just want to start taking photos. I dont want to waste my money on something that looks like a cell phone picture. What is the one lens I should get if I can only afford one and I am a total beginner?
Honestly dont sweat those confusing letters, we all started there and it can be a total headache. If you want one lens that does everything for your trip and stays under $800, there is one clear winner that I use all the time. The Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM is basically a Swiss army knife for your camera. I have used one for years and I am still so happy with how it performs. No complaints here.
- Range: Shoot wide mountain vistas then zoom way in on a distant animal without moving.
- Size: Much lighter than carrying a whole bag of heavy glass around the park.
- Budget: Sits right around $800, especially if you check for refurbished deals on the Canon site. Ignore the gear snobs... modern RF glass is miles ahead of phone cameras. Not having to swap lenses in the wind and dust at Glacier is gonna make life way easier. It works well for dogs and dinner shots too.
