So I finally bit the bullet and grabbed the R5 Mark II but now I am second-guessing my entire glass lineup. I have been shooting Canon for like fifteen years so I know my way around a 24-70 but the new autofocus on this thing is so fast I feel like my old EF glass with the adapter is just barely lagging behind during high-speed tracking. My logic was to just keep using the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II because it is a beast but for a one-lens-does-everything setup on this specific body it feels... I dont know, slightly clunky?
I have a huge wedding gig in Seattle coming up in less than two weeks and I really need a "glued to the camera" lens that handles that 45MP sensor without losing any sharpness at the edges. I was looking at the RF 24-105mm f/4 because of the extra reach but then I worry about the f/4 during the darker reception moments. But then the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 is pricey and I am wondering if the IS is actually that much better than the old EF version. Or maybe that crazy 24-105 f/2.8? But that thing is a literal brick and I am gonna be on my feet for twelve hours.
Budget is around 2500 to 3000 but I need to pull the trigger tonight to get it in time for my flight. What are you guys actually keeping on the R5II for 90% of your shots? Is the 28-70 f/2 just too heavy for a long day or is the image quality worth the back pain...
Congrats on the new R5II, man. Honestly, I went through the same dilemma when I switched. I ended up grabbing the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM and I couldn't be more satisfied with how it performs. Since you're worried about that 12-hour wedding day, trust me, your back will thank you for skipping the f/2 prime-zoom or that massive f/2.8 24-105. This lens is just so much more practical and the IS is a total game changer compared to the old EF version. It keeps the weight down and saves you some cash while still being sharp enough for that 45MP sensor. Tbh, it handles the autofocus speeds way better than my old adapted glass ever did. Definitely the best bang for your buck if you need one lens to do it all... good luck with the gig!
