Ive been shooting with Canon DSLRs for a decade so I thought I knew what I was doing when I jumped to the R5, but honestly the RF glass choice is stressing me out big time. Im headed to a multi-day outdoor wedding in the PNW next month and I keep second guessing my kit. I currently only have the 50mm 1.2 but I know Im gonna miss the wide shots or the close up candids if I cant switch fast enough and the weather might be crap too.
My budget is pretty flexible around 2500 but I need something that stays on the body 90% of the time. Is the 24-70 f2.8 actually worth the weight for a whole day or is there a better all-arounder I should be looking at?
I went through a similar dilemma last year and honestly, I am so satisfied with the decision I made. I needed gear that could handle high resolution without constant swaps in the rain. I got a high-end standard zoom that has been my main workhorse ever since.
- The image stabilization provides roughly 8 stops of compensation which is vital for handheld low light.
- It maintains a constant f/2.8 aperture ensuring exposure consistency across the focal range.
- The weather sealing gaskets held up perfectly during a four hour shoot in heavy fog. I learned that the convenience of having everything from 24mm to 70mm in one barrel outweighs the extra weight. It works well for my workflow because I dont lose shots while fumbling with bags. You should definitely go for the fast zoom.
