I just got the R50 for my trip to Tokyo in three weeks and Im honestly kinda spiraling about which lens to get because the kit lens is so dark indoors. My logic was to just grab the RF 50mm f/1.8 since everyone calls it the best budget prime and its only like $170-200 but then I read about the crop factor and how it turns into an 80mm lens on the R50 and now Im worried thats way too tight for street shots or taking photos of my ramen in cramped restaurants. I saw people recommending the RF 28mm f/2.8 pancake lens too which is still mostly in my $300 budget but then some reviews say the 50mm has better bokeh for portraits so I keep going back and forth and cant make a decision. Im really stressed that if I get the 50mm I wont be able to fit anything in the frame when Im walking around Shibuya but if I get the 28mm will it even look that different from my kit lens at the wide end besides being faster? I just want something that makes my photos look professional without spending a fortune. Does anyone have the R50 and actually use the 50mm as their main lens or is it just too zoomed in for everyday stuff...
Honestly, go for the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM. I used it on my R50 and was so happy with how it handled cramped ramen shops. The 50mm is amazing for portraits but way too tight for Shibuya streets. This pancake lens is tiny and makes the whole setup feel like a point-and-shoot, which is basically perfect for travel. You definitely wont regret the wider view.
