Im honestly so fed up with my current setup on the R7. My logic was the RF 100-400 would be plenty since its so light for hiking the trails here in Oregon but man that f/8 aperture is just killing me in the woods. Every single hawk shot from this morning is just a blurry mess of noise and I am ready to toss this lens in the lake. I was looking at the RF 200-800 but its sold out everywhere and way over my $1600 limit anyway. Should I just get an adapted EF 100-400 II or is there something better I am missing? I need to get this sorted before my trip next week...

> Should I just get an adapted EF 100-400 II @Reply #1 - good point! EF glass is 100% the way to go for the R7. If that Canon version is still pushing your budget, check out a used Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary for Canon EF. That f/6.3 aperture at the long end gives you more light than f/8, and youll save enough to actually enjoy your trip... those Oregon woods can be brutal.

honestly are you okay with the extra weight? jumping from that tiny rf 100-400 to adapted glass is a huge shift. im really satisfied with the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 for Canon EF tho. the weather sealing is clutch for oregon and the g2 version has way better optics for that high res r7 sensor. it helps the af lock focus faster in those dark woods since it lets in more light. definitely worth checking out!

The R7 sensor is really demanding when it comes to light because of the high pixel density. I totally understand the frustration with f/8 in those Oregon woods. If you're capped at $1600, transitioning to pro-grade EF glass via an adapter is definitely your most logical move. Here are the two best options for your situation:
