Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just got a Canon R6 and I have no idea what lens to pick for portraits. Im based in Chicago and need something for my sisters wedding next month. My budget is like 800 bucks. Should I just get the nifty fifty or is there something better?

Congrats on the R6! Since you have a wedding coming up, skip the nifty fifty and grab something with a bit more reach. I honestly love using the Canon RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM for portraits, its super sharp and the stabilization is a lifesaver.

  • Beautiful bokeh for wedding shots
  • Tack sharp results
  • Fits your budget perfectly Honestly, you cant go wrong with this focal length for those candid shots!

Saw this earlier! Are you shooting indoors or outside? Honestly, you should really look into the Canon RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM for those dreamy wedding portraits. It is amazing!

@Reply #3 - good point! Honestly, I keep going back and forth on this for weddings because you really need something that wont let you down when the pressure is on. I totally agree that the 85mm is dreamy, but for a wedding, having a backup or something that covers more ground is basically a must imo.

  • Bring extra batteries
  • Consider a cheap flash
  • Dont stress too much about the gear Not sure but IIRC a lot of people swear by having that extra focal length just to be safe. Someone told me once that the gear matters less than just being ready to snap the moment, so definitely dont overthink it. Youre gonna do amazing, just keep it simple!

Honestly id skip the cheap primes for wedding work since you only get one shot at the ceremony. I had issues with focus hunting on some of the cheaper RF glass when things got dark. If you can stretch the budget just a tiny bit, look at the Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD if adapted or better yet, grab a used Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art with the EF-RF adapter. Sigma glass on the R6 is rock solid and gives you that high-end pro look without paying native RF prices. You wont regret having that extra light stop indoors. Hang in there, youll do great!

If you want zoom flexibility for a wedding, the Canon RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM is your best bet. Sharpness is solid for the price.

  • Versatile focal range
  • Built-in stabilization
