Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with my Canon 5D Mark IV for a couple of years now, mostly focusing on landscapes and portraits, but lately, I’ve been really itching to dive into the world of macro photography. There's something so fascinating about capturing the tiny details you usually miss with a standard zoom.

I’m looking for a dedicated macro lens that pairs perfectly with the 5D IV’s full-frame sensor. I’ve been eyeing the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM because of its legendary reputation and the built-in Hybrid Image Stabilization, which seems crucial since the 5D IV doesn't have in-body stabilization. However, I’ve also heard great things about the Sigma 105mm and the Tamron 90mm, and I’m curious if those third-party options hold up in terms of autofocus speed and weather sealing.

My main subjects will likely be a mix of backyard insects and some highly detailed jewelry shots for a local project. I’m willing to spend a bit more for quality glass, but I want to make sure I’m making a smart investment. For those of you still rocking the 5D Mark IV, which macro lens has given you the most consistent results and the sharpest images? Any specific pros or cons I should know about before I pull the trigger?

Honestly, after years with the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, I'd suggest sticking with it. Unfortunately, my Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro had some AF hunting issues. 📸

Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, I've had issues with the autofocus on third-party lenses like the Sigma mentioned earlier. For consistent results on the 5D IV, stick with the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. Quick tip: grab the Canon Tripod Mount Ring D too. Using a tripod is essential for jewelry, as the depth of field is razor-thin even with that great Hybrid IS!

Would love to know this too

Are you planning on using a ring flash or just natural light for the insects? Lighting setup is usually the bigger hurdle than the lens choice for macro work. I've been very satisfied with the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD F017 on my 5D IV for a while now. It works well for handheld bugs because the VC is quite sticky and the weather sealing has held up fine in the rain. For the jewelry project tho, you should honestly look into the Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG for Canon EF. I've DIYed a few macro setups using these tubes with my standard portrait glass and the results are pin-sharp. No complaints about the image quality at all. Tbh, if you already have an 85mm prime, sticking a 25mm tube on it is a game changer for jewelry shots... might save you enough to buy a better light rig.
