Best street photography lens for Canon EOS R10 owners?

I’ve been loving my Canon EOS R10, but I’m struggling to find the perfect lens for street photography. Since it’s an APS-C sensor, I’m looking for something compact and discrete that won't intimidate people. I’ve been eyeing the RF 28mm f/2.8 pancake lens for its size, but I’m also considering the RF 35mm f/1.8 for that extra bit of bokeh and stabilization. My main concern is finding that 'sweet spot' focal length that feels natural for candid shots without being too zoomed in. Budget-wise, I'd like to stay under $600. For those of you shooting street on the R10, which lens do you find yourself reaching for the most?

I went through this last year. I originally grabbed the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM thinking it’d be my all-rounder, but unfortunately, it felt way too tight for street work on my R10. Honestly, I was pretty disappointed with the narrow field of view. I eventually switched to the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM pancake. It’s significantly more discrete and fits the budget perfectly at around $300. It really changed how I shoot candid shots. What focal length are you leaning toward now?

Honestly, avoid the 35mm if you want a natural field of view. On your R10, it behaves like a 56mm, which is way too tight for street candid shots and can feel really claustrophobic in crowds.

I'm super satisfied with the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM. It gives you a 45mm equivalent—the perfect 'sweet spot' for street work. It's tiny, discrete, and doesn't scare people off!

Works great for me

Just saw this thread and had to chime in because I'm obsessed with my R10 setup! Everyone is mentioning the 28mm, which is cool, but you should really look at the Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM. It’s my absolute go-to for street stuff. On the APS-C sensor, it works out to about 38mm, which is such a sweet spot... not too wide like a phone, but not tight like a portrait lens. I used it at a busy farmer's market last weekend and the results were amazing! The f/1.8 is a total game changer for low light, and the bokeh is super creamy compared to the pancake lens. I’ve even done a bit of a DIY stealth mode where I used ProTapes Pro Gaff Gaffer Tape to cover the silver Canon logos on the body. It makes the whole kit look way less intimidating and more like an old toy camera... super helpful for those candid moments. If you want to see how it compares, I usually hit up the Camera Decision website to look at side-by-side specs, or check out the samples on the DPReview forums. For under $600, it's honestly a beast and fits the R10 like a glove!

Honestly, watch out for the crop factor on the Canon EOS R10. Because it's an APS-C sensor, that Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM actually feels like a 56mm lens—it's way tighter than you'd expect and I found it really awkward for narrow streets.

In my experience, I'd definitely go with the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM. It gives you a much more natural 45mm equivalent field of view. I tried the 35mm first but, unfortunately, I kept backing into walls trying to fit everything in teh frame! The pancake is discrete adn perfect for the R10. Hope this helps!

Would love to know this too

honestly im right there with you. ive been shooting with the Canon EOS R10 for a while and i still havent found that one lens that stays on the body 24/7 for street stuff. To add to the point above: it really is a struggle balancing that crop factor with the small form factor we all want. i was out at a busy street fair last weekend and kept swapping gear because nothing felt just right for the narrow aisles and constant movement. i am super satisfied with how the r10 handles the quick action tho, no complaints about the speed. quick tips:

  • use electronic shutter for total silence when doing candids
  • map exposure comp to the lens control ring for faster adjustments

Re: Just saw this thread and had to chime...

  • totally agree with Linksysoiy on the 24mm! I have been using this setup for ages and that focal length on a crop sensor is just magic. Since the R10 lacks in-body stabilization, you really have to be careful about which glass you pick for street work. Here is how I see the top contenders for our APS-C bodies:
  • Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM: This is the winner! That 38mm effective view is fantastic for candid shots. Plus, the Image Stabilization is a total lifesaver when light drops and you are handheld. It is such a versatile piece of gear.
  • Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM: I love this for architecture-heavy street stuff. It hits like a 25mm lens. It is crazy small and discrete! Just remember it doesnt have IS, so you gotta keep your shutter speeds up or you will get blurry shots.
  • Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM: Super slim pancake design. It turns the R10 into a pocket camera basically. Great 45mm equivalent, though I personally miss the faster f/1.8 aperture of the 24mm when I am out late. Go with the 24mm if you want the best all-arounder tho. Its amazing!
