Best budget zoom lens for Canon EOS RP users?

I recently picked up a Canon EOS RP and I'm loving the full-frame quality, but my current prime lens is limiting for travel. I’m looking for a solid budget zoom lens to round out my kit. I’ve been eyeing the RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM because it's so affordable, but I'm worried about the slow aperture in low light. Would I be better off getting an EF-RF adapter and looking at older EF glass like the 70-300mm IS II USM? I primarily shoot landscapes and some street photography, so portability is a plus. What’s the best 'bang for your buck' zoom lens you’ve found that doesn't compromise too much on sharpness?

Hi there! I totally get the struggle of finding that perfect travel zoom. Since the Canon EOS RP doesn't have in-body stabilization, having a lens with good IS is seriously important for those sharp landscape shots!

Here's what I recommend based on my own kit:

1. The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is actually amazing for street photography! It's so light, and honestly, the RP's high ISO performance handles the slow aperture better than you'd think.
2. If you want more reach, the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS RF is a fantastic value combo. It's super fast at focusing!

In my opinion, the native RF 24-105mm is the best 'bang for your buck' because it keeps your setup portable for travel. Hope this helps!

For your situation, I'd suggest being careful about jumping straight into an adapter setup. While EF glass is cheap, the added bulk of an adapter kind of kills the portability of the Canon EOS RP.

Before you buy, you might want to consider these two budget-friendly paths:

* **The Native Budget Pick:** The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is honestly sharper than it has any right to be. Just make sure to lean on the RP's high ISO capabilities in low light; full-frame sensors handle it way better than you'd think!
* **The EF Alternative:** If you really need reach, the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM is a value king, but it's chunky once you add the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R.

IMO, stick with native RF glass if you're doing street photography. Carrying a heavy setup all day is a mistake I've made too many times! 📸

In my experience, you might want to consider the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM. Honestly, it's the ultimate 'one-lens' solution for the RP. While it's a bit heavier than the 24-105mm STM, the extra reach is killer for travel.

If you're worried about low light, maybe check out the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM later on to swap in for night shots. It's super sharp! 📸

Like someone mentioned, the native RF lenses are super convenient for the RP, but there is a definite trade-off between portability and glass quality. If you are doing landscapes, you might find the budget STM zooms a bit limiting.

  • Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM: If you grab the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, this lens is a beast. You get a constant f/4 aperture which solves your low light worries, and the sharpness is more consistent across the frame compared to the budget RF 24-105mm. It is bulky tho.
  • Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM: This is the choice if you want to keep the kit tiny. Its not the fastest, but for street stuff during the day, it keeps the camera very discrete. Tbh, the EF L glass used is usually the better bang for buck if you dont mind the extra length from the adapter. The STM lenses are decent, but they just dont have that same pop.
