So I finally picked up a Canon Rebel T7 a couple months ago because I wanted to take nicer photos of my dog and maybe my girlfriend when we go on hikes. Ive just been using that 18-55mm kit lens that came in the box and honestly its fine for landscape stuff but the backgrounds never look that blurry, you know? Like that professional look where the person just pops out. I keep seeing people talk about bokeh or something? Im totally confused by all the numbers and letters like f/1.8 or STM and honestly the whole thing is just making my head spin. I dont really have a huge budget right now, maybe 200 bucks tops, because I live in NYC and rent is already eating my whole paycheck, but I really wanna get a better portrait shot before our anniversary trip in July. Is there a cheap lens that actually works on my T7 to get those blurry backgrounds without me having to sell my kidney or learn rocket science just to figure out how to attach it? I just want something simple that makes my photos look less like a phone picture. Any recommendations for a total beginner who is completely out of their depth here?

^ This. Also, if you want that creamy bokeh, definitely look at the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. The f/1.8 aperture is a game changer compared to your kit lens because it lets in way more light!

  • Set your aperture as low as it goes (f/1.8) to blur that background.
  • Get closer to your subject and keep the background further away for max bokeh effect. It is super cheap and totally worth it!

Been thinking about your question while grabbing coffee. Forget all the technical jargon for a second, honestly. If you really want that professional look without breaking the bank in NYC, you need to step away from zoom lenses and get a prime. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is basically your best friend here. It fits your T7 perfectly and it is well within your budget. Here is how you actually get those results:

  • Set your camera to Aperture Priority mode, marked as Av on the dial.
  • Twist the dial until that f-number hits 1.8.
  • Try to keep some distance between your subject and the background, like a wall or trees, to make the blur effect really pop. I used to struggle with the same thing when I started. Once you switch to this lens, you will notice the difference immediately. It is super light, so carrying it on hikes is no trouble at all. Just make sure you are focusing on the eyes and you are golden. Seriously, for that price, you wont find anything better. Your anniversary photos are gonna look way more pro than they would with that kit lens, trust me.

Honestly, you dont need to stress about the specs. Just grab a standard nifty fifty prime lens from Canon. Ive been shooting for years and that focal length is basically the gold standard for portraits on your camera. It creates that blurry background look instantly compared to your kit lens. Its super affordable, lightweight for hiking, and honestly makes a huge difference in how your shots turn out. You'll love it.
