What is the absolute best prime lens I should get for portraits on my new Canon EOS R6? I finally upgraded from my old rebel t6i and im literally buzzing to start shooting some professional looking stuff for my sisters wedding coming up in August. I spent like three hours watching youtube reviews and everyone keeps saying the RF 85mm f1.2 L is the holy grail but honestly the price tag is making me sweat a little bit and I dont know if my bank account can take that hit right now.
Then I saw the RF 85mm f2 macro which is way more affordable but some people on the forums were complaining about the autofocus being a bit slow or noisy which makes me nervous for a wedding environment where things move fast. I have about 1200 dollars saved up specifically for this lens and I need something that can handle low light really well because the reception is in this old dimly lit barn in Vermont. Is the f1.2 really that much better than the f2 versions for a hobbyist like me or am I just buying into the hype? I keep seeing the EF 85mm f1.4 IS mentioned too with an adapter but then that makes the setup so bulky and I kinda want to stay native RF if possible. Does anyone have experience with these on the R6 specifically?
Unfortunately, the Canon RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM really let me down. I found the autofocus just isnt fast enough for weddings, especially in a dark barn.
- Avoid the RF 85mm f2 for events.
- Look for a used Canon EF 85mm f1.4L IS USM. It is bulky with the adapter, but the native f2 is just not as good as I expected for professional results.
