so i finally got the r7 and i have a trip to yellowstone in like three weeks and im lowkey panicking about what glass to bring. ive been looking at the rf 100-500 because everyone says its the gold standard but honestly it is way over my $1500 budget right now and i cant justify it. then i saw the rf 100-400 which is super cheap but is f/8 at the long end gonna be a nightmare for those early morning shots? i also looked at the older ef 100-400 ii with an adapter because people say the image quality is better but then its bulky and i dont know if the autofocus will keep up. my logic was to go native but now im just second guessing everything...

The Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM is actually a solid, safe bet for your budget. It works fine. Honestly dont worry too much about f/8 if you just bump your ISO for those early dawn shots. If you want something more robust, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is super reliable and worth the weight. Let me know if you need more help.
