Which all-around lens should I get for the Canon EOS R1?

So I finally pulled the trigger on the R1 after years of sticking with my trusty R5 and before that the 1DX series. I've been doing pro sports and event work for a long time but I've hit this weird wall where my old kit just feels like it's holding back the new tech. Usually I'm a prime lens guy through and through

  • I love my 400mm and my 85mm - but I've got this huge marathon project coming up in London next month and then some outdoor adventure stuff in the Alps right after. I really don't want to be swapping glass in the dirt or rain while trying to catch 40fps bursts. I need that one 'holy grail' lens that can actually keep up with the R1's insane autofocus and readout speed.

I've been looking at the RF 24-105mm f4 L because it's light and the range is great for travel but I'm honestly worried the f4 is gonna be a bottleneck when the lighting gets moody or if I'm shooting high shutter speeds late in the day. Then there's the 28-70mm f2 which is legendary for the bokeh but man that thing is a total brick. I'm worried it's gonna be too front-heavy even on the R1's integrated grip and maybe the AF motors aren't as snappy as the newer Nano USM stuff?

Budget isn't the biggest concern since I already dropped a fortune on the body but I'd like to stay around 3k if possible so I can still afford some extra CFexpress B cards. I keep looking at the 24-70mm 2.8 as the 'safe' choice but is it long enough for an all-arounder when you're stuck behind a barrier and can't move? Or should I just bite the bullet and get the 24-105mm f2.8 Z even though it's basically a small telescope? I just don't want to buy a lens that bottlenecks the most expensive sensor I've ever owned. What are you guys pairing with the R1 when you can only take one piece of glass to a gig?

I would suggest being super careful with that f/4 zoom if you're doing pro sports, might really regret it when the clouds roll in!
