Im trying to pick a macro lens for my 90D to shoot bugs in my backyard. I saw the Canon 100mm L is great but its way over my 500 dollar budget. Then I looked at the Sigma 105mm, though people are split on the autofocus speed. Is the Sigma worth it or should I just save longer?

If the Sigma feels risky, you might want to consider the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM. It fits your budget perfectly and the sharpness is honestly insane for the price. Just be careful with your working distance since you need to be pretty close to the bugs. Make sure to use a tripod or flash to keep your shutter speed up, as stability is key at that magnification.

Honestly, skip the expensive L glass for now. I used the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro for years and the focus speed for bugs is totally fine if you pre-focus. If you want a cheaper route, look at the Tokina AT-X 100mm f/2.8 PRO D Macro. It is sharp as a tack and way cheaper. Save your cash for a better flash setup, you'll need it for backyard bug shots anyway.

Regarding what #2 said about the Canon 60mm, I honestly found the working distance too short for skittish bugs. You end up spooking them before getting a shot. If you want better reach for a low price, look at these:
