Just picked up an R6 Mark II and honestly the kit lens is fine but I really want that prime look for street photography here in Chicago. I have been scouring the forums and I keep seeing people swear by the RF 35mm f/1.8 because of the IS and the macro capabilities, but then I see others saying the 50mm f/1.8 is way better because it is so cheap and compact. Im kind of torn because I dont want to look like I am carrying a bazooka when I am walking around downtown, you know? Stealth is key for me.
Here is what I am trying to balance:
- Budget is ideally under 600 bucks.
- Needs to be small enough to fit in a jacket pocket or small bag.
- I prefer a wider view for street but not so wide it gets distorted.
- Autofocus needs to be snappy for candid shots.
Does the 35mm justify the extra cost over the nifty fifty for just street stuff? Or am I missing some hidden gem that isnt a massive L-series lens? I have a trip coming up in about three weeks so I need to make a decision soon before I head out. Really just trying to find something that wont let me down in low light...

Agree with the previous user, though I honestly had issues with the autofocus hunting in low light on those cheaper Canon primes. It was super frustrating during my last trip. Honestly, just look into some third-party options from Sigma or Tamron if you can find them. They usually pack way better glass quality and build than the entry-level stuff. Dont settle for gear that keeps you from getting the shot.
