Ugh, Im stressing out because I have a big family shoot coming up in like two weeks here in Seattle and I still cant decide on a portrait lens for my R6. My budget is pretty much capped at 1200 bucks max, which makes this super annoying.
I was looking at the RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM because its affordable and the stabilization would be nice for handheld shots, but then I keep hearing that the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art (with the adapter) is just miles better for bokeh and sharpness. My logic was that the Sigma might be a pain to lug around since it needs the EF-EOS R adapter, but maybe the image quality trade-off is worth it? Im also briefly considering the RF 50mm f/1.2 but honestly thats just way out of my price range unless I find a steal used, which I dont have time for.
Is the AF on the adapted Sigma gonna let me down during a fast-paced session? I really need something that nails eye-autofocus on the R6 without hunting constantly. Should I just play it safe with the native RF 85mm or risk the adapter route for that f/1.4 look?
Just catching up here. Regarding what #1 said about skipping the adapter, I actually had issues with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art on my R6, especially with inconsistent eye-AF tracking. It is sharp, but the weight with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is a drag.

Honestly, I prefer the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM if you can stretch the budget or find it used. It is sharper than the 85mm f/2 and the compression for portraits is just better. The bokeh is creamy and the autofocus is snappy enough for any family session. Stick to native glass, the adapted stuff is just too risky.
Honestly, skip the adapter drama for a family shoot. I've used the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM and the eye-AF is rock solid on the R6. It is super lightweight too.
