so Ive had my Canon EOS R6 Mark II for about a month now and honestly im getting super frustrated trying to figure out lenses. everybody talks about f-stops and focal lengths and my brain is just melting trying to understand all of it. I basically just want to take photos of small rooms inside houses and maybe some landscape stuff when I go hiking near Denver next month. My budget is around 800 bucks max cuz I already spent way too much on the camera body itself. I went to a local shop and the guy started talking about RF versus EF mounts and adapters and my eyes totally glazed over. like why is this so complicated lol. Can someone just tell me which wide-angle lens to actually buy that wont break the bank and is easy enough for a total beginner to use without messing everything up?
Finding a budget wide-angle for the R6 Mark II is genuinely tough without running into issues. I tried the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM first, but unfortunately had issues with edge distortion in tight indoor spaces. Switched to the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD via adapter previously, though results were mixed. Ultimately, looking at costs is crucial here.
- Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM: Inexpensive and lightweight, but not as good as expected for sharp corners.
- Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art: Great optical quality, unfortunately way over budget.
To add to the point above: honestly that tiny prime can be pretty soft in the corners. What kind of hiking terrain are you shooting?
Forget the adapters for now. Just grab the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM. It fits your budget, is super tiny, and handles tight spaces easily.
- Watch out for edge distortion in tiny rooms
- Step back when you can
