so im totally new to this but i really want to get into photography. my cousin let me use his canon camera last weekend and now im obsessed. i live in chicago and im hoping to pick up my own canon r series body before i go on a trip in august. my budget is around 1200 bucks but honestly looking at the canon website is super overwhelming with all the different models and lenses and stuff. does anyone know if there are any decent sales going on right now or if i should just wait for a holiday or something? i feel like i have no idea what im even looking for here...

Check out the Canon EOS R10 24.2MP Mirrorless or Canon EOS R50 24.2MP Mirrorless. Both are stellar for beginners and way under your budget, honestly. Totally satisfied with them!

Like someone mentioned, tech specs can get overwhelming fast, but honestly focusing purely on the numbers is how you actually learn the gear. If you have 1200 bucks, dont just look for the newest body. You should look at the refurbished section on the official site. It is basically brand new and way cheaper. Here is how I would split that budget for the best performance:

  • Canon EOS R10 24.2MP Mirrorless for the body. It is fast and the autofocus is rock solid.
  • Spend the leftover cash on glass, specifically the Canon RF-S 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM lens. Forget waiting for holidays. Canon runs loyalty and refurb deals constantly, so just refresh that page once a day. You will get way better value that way than buying retail. Trust me, putting more money into the lens is the smart move.

Saw this earlier but been out shooting all day. Honestly, jumping into the R series is a solid move, but dont get too hung up on the specs right now. When I first switched over, I spent weeks obsessing over technical charts until my brain felt like mush. Once I actually held a camera in my hands, the menu system just clicked for me. My advice is to look at these factors before buying anything:

  • Lens selection is way more important than the body itself so save some cash for good glass.
  • Ergonomics matter way more than resolution if you plan on carrying it around a city all day.
  • The used market is a gold mine if you know where to look. Just stick with Canon and you wont regret it. Their ecosystem is super intuitive once you get the hang of the dials.

Honestly if you have 1200, stop stressing about the body and start thinking about glass. In my experience over the years, the body is just a tool but your lens is what actually defines the shot. Since you're traveling, weight and reliability are everything. Check out these two paths:

  • Canon EOS R10 24.2MP Mirrorless
  • This thing is a workhorse. It's super light, snappy, and perfect for carrying around all day. The pro is the price and speed; the con is it's not full-frame, but for a beginner, you really wont notice the difference.
  • Canon EOS RP 26.2MP Mirrorless
  • If you want that full-frame look for portraits, this is the budget king. It's older tech, so the battery life is pretty mediocre compared to the newer stuff, but the image quality is legit and it feels great in the hand. Don't waste your cash on a body that's way over budget because you'll just end up stuck with the cheap kit lens. Grab one of these and put whatever is left towards a prime lens.
