Ive been refreshing B&H and Adorama like a crazy person every hour because I really need to get my hands on the Sony A7 IV before I have to shoot my cousins wedding in like three weeks and my current setup is just not gonna cut it anymore honestly. Im super stressed about the budget because I only have about $2200 to spend on the body and maybe one lens if I can swing it but the prices just wont budge. I keep looking at the A7 III because its way cheaper and obviously a solid choice still but my logic was that if I invest now I wont have to upgrade again for years whereas with the older model I might feel limited by the autofocus pretty fast especially for a wedding. Then there is the Canon R6 Mark II which is amazing but then I gotta deal with more expensive lenses and I already have a couple of old Sony mount lenses from a friend so that makes the A7 IV the winner in my head but only if I can find a deal.
Did I miss some big seasonal sale or something? I saw a bundle deal last week that had some extra batteries and a bag but I hesitated and now its back to full price and I could kick myself. I checked Greentoe but I havent used them before so I'm kinda nervous about if the warranty is legit or if I'm gonna get scammed or something. I even thought about going used on MPB or KEH but for a camera this expensive I really want that new car smell and the peace of mind of a full warranty because I'm paranoid like that. Does anyone know if there are any promo codes or maybe an EDU discount that actually works right now? I tried my old college email but no luck so far.
My brain is just looping between:
- get the A7 IV now and just eat the cost
- wait another week and pray for a price drop
- settle for the A7 III and save $800
If anyone has seen a coupon or a specific site running a secret sale please let me know before I have a total meltdown and just buy it at full retail price out of desperation...
just saw this... the jump to the Sony Alpha a7 IV 33.0MP Mirrorless is worth it for the autofocus alone. comparing it to my old Sony Alpha a7 III 24.2MP Mirrorless, the difference at wedding receptions is massive tbh.
- a7 iv: better eye tracking for moving guests
- a7 iii: solid but hunts more in dim light dont be too scared of used gear. getting a mint body from Sony Alpha a7 IV 33.0MP Mirrorless on a resale site saved me hundreds.
^ This. Also, what specific lenses did your friend give you? If they're crop glass, you'll be stuck in APS-C mode on the Sony Alpha a7 IV 33MP Mirrorless Camera Body, which cuts your resolution. Unfortunately, I've had issues with timing sales before and they're not as good as expected lately. Hunting for a deal last year was a waste tbh; paying full price was the only safe way to have it ready for a client.
Wait really?? Thats actually super helpful. I always thought it was the other way around.
TIL! Thanks for sharing
Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
I am super satisfied with how the Sony Alpha a7 IV handles 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording. I was stressing about the cost too but finally got a win by using an EDU discount that actually worked for me tho...
- Register for student verification
- Check for instant rebates
- Look for EDU bundles The 759 phase-detection points are incredible and I have no complaints.
