so black friday is literally right around the corner and i am lowkey freaking out because i still havent pulled the trigger on a new camera. i've been eyeing the canon mirrorless lineup for months now. i did some digging and saw on b&h that the r6 mark ii might have like a 500 dollar discount which sounds amazing but then i read this thread on reddit saying the r8 is actually going to be the better value deal with the kit lenses at best buy and now i just dont know what to do.

my budget is strictly under 2000 bucks for the body and at least one decent lens because i really want to start shooting my sons soccer matches and our big family trip to italy next summer. here is what i'm looking for:

  • fast autofocus (those kids dont stop moving)
  • lightweight (cant be a brick in my bag in rome)
  • good low light for indoor holiday parties

i’m in seattle and id really like to have it in my hands before the december holidays start so i can actually practice using it. should i wait for the actual friday or do these deals usually leak early? i feel like if i wait too long everything will just sell out and i’ll be stuck with my old rebel t6 which is basically a paperweight at this point... is the r6 ii even worth the extra money over the r8 if i just want good family photos?

You are gonna love the jump from that Rebel! For Italy, the Canon EOS R8 Body is a total dream because it weighs almost nothing. But for soccer, the Canon EOS R6 Mark II Body is incredible since the battery lasts forever.

  • R8: Amazing value and super portable.
  • R6 II: Fantastic stabilization for action shots. Grab the R8 bundle with the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM to stay under budget!

To add to the point above: i honestly had issues with some of the cheaper kit lenses being way too slow for indoor parties. unfortunately the low light performance was disappointing and i was pretty bummed out... quick question tho, are you mostly shooting from the sidelines or the stands at those games? and do you think youll actually need dual card slots for the italy trip?

i would suggest getting the more expensive one for the peace of mind but buy it as soon as the price drops because those deals are already leaking and stuff sells out way faster than you think. be careful about waiting until the actual friday. honestly though you might want to consider how youre gonna protect everything for that italy trip. i actually spent all afternoon in the garage trying to diy my own padded divider for my backpack using some old yoga mats and heavy duty adhesive. it turned into a total disaster because the glue wouldnt set right and now my workshop smells like chemicals but i really wanted something more rugged than the flimsy ones from the store. i ended up having to scrape the gunk off my workbench with a putty knife for like an hour. anyway lol

omg i am literally in the exact same spot right now its so stressful!! i stumbled upon this today and felt so seen lol. i am also trying to upgrade from an old dslr and i am terrified of making the wrong choice since i plan on keeping my next camera for at least a decade. honestly i keep going back and forth between the Canon EOS R6 Mark II Body and the Canon EOS R8 Body because i want that perfect balance of it wont break if i drop it and i can actually carry this thing. for me it is all about the longevity of the tech... like is the autofocus gonna stay relevant or am i gonna be looking for a new one in three years? i want to invest in something that handles my crazy toddlers now but will still be great when they are in middle school! the fear of buying something too flimsy is real tho... i just want that peace of mind that comes with a solid piece of gear even if it costs a bit more up front. i am lowkey losing sleep over these black friday leaks too haha!

i saw this earlier and i've been thinking about your trip... unfortunately i had a pretty rough experience trying to go the lightweight route for a big family vacation last year. i thought id save some weight but it ended up being a total letdown. the battery life on the more compact mirrorless bodies was just not as good as expected and i actually missed the sunset at the colosseum because my last battery tapped out. it was so frustrating to be standing there with a dead camera while everyone else was snapping away. plus i tried shooting some sports with a similar setup and i kept worrying about the single card slot failing and losing everything from the trip. for me the peace of mind and reliability is worth way more than saving a few bucks on a deal that might leave you hanging. before you jump on a sale tho... are you the type of person who carries a bunch of spare batteries everywhere? and how devastated would you be if a single memory card corrupted during your italy trip?

Seconded!
