Ugh so I am leaving for a big trip to Japan in like two weeks and my old phone camera just isnt cutting it anymore. My sister told me I need to get a mirrorless camera but honestly I have no idea what that even means. I went to a local shop and felt super overwhelmed by all the options and the prices were way higher than I expected. I have about 800 dollars set aside for a body and a lens but I keep seeing different sales online and I am totally lost on what is actually a good deal or just a marketing thing.

Everything looks like alphabet soup with the model names and I dont want to buy something outdated just because it was on sale. Im looking for something simple enough for a beginner to use while walking around Tokyo but that will still take decent photos. Should I be looking at the big retailer sites or is there somewhere else I should be checking? Does anyone know if there are any legit mirrorless camera deals happening right now or should I just wait until I get back...

Honestly, 800 bucks is a solid start for a mirrorless setup if you shop smart. Forget the super expensive stuff for now. You should definitely check out the Sony Alpha a6100 Mirrorless Camera 24.2MP because it is honestly perfect for beginners wandering around Japan. The autofocus is super fast, which helps when you are trying to grab shots in crowded streets. Another decent option is the Canon EOS R50 Mirrorless Camera 24.2MP since the menus are way more intuitive if you are just starting out. Check out the refurbished sections on the manufacturer sites too. You can save a ton of cash that way. Don't worry about the alphabet soup, just look for something that feels right in your hands. A camera is only good if you actually want to carry it with you all day...

Like someone mentioned, dont stress about the jargon. Honestly, for Japan, weight is everything since you will be walking for miles. If you want something compact, look at the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV 20MP.

  • It has great stabilization for street shots.
  • The Micro Four Thirds mount makes the lenses super tiny. Just remember to grab an extra battery. Those batteries drain fast in the cold.

Been thinking about your setup for Japan and honestly, just jumping into a local shop without doing research is how most people end up with gear that collects dust. That alphabet soup of model numbers is designed to confuse you, so dont feel bad about being overwhelmed. Before you drop any cash, you gotta figure out what you actually value more:

  • Do you want something tiny that fits in a jacket pocket, or are you okay with a slight weight penalty for better handling?
  • Are you mostly gonna upload to social media, or are you hoping to print these shots later?
  • Are you planning on doing any video, or is this strictly for stills? Whatever you do, stay away from those bundles that come with two kit lenses and a cheap tripod. Usually, those extra accessories are low-quality filler just to inflate the price. You are way better off buying a body and one decent lens that covers a versatile range. Also, be careful with sites that show prices way lower than the big name retailers. If it looks too good to be true, you are likely looking at gray market gear which means you wont have a valid warranty if something breaks while you are abroad. That is the last thing you want on a trip like that. Once you clarify if you prefer portability over zoom range, I can give you some better advice on what to look for.
