im honestly so fed up with my current zoom setup, its just way too bulky and heavy for walking around downtown chicago all day. grabbed an x-s10 a few months ago and I love the body itself, but carrying this giant kit lens is killing my shoulders and honestly making me not even want to take my camera out anymore which defeats the whole point!! I need something small, light, and sharp for street photography and random everyday stuff, especially since I have a big trip coming up next month and my arms cant take another week of lugging around five pounds of glass. trying to keep it under three hundred bucks if possible since I spent way too much on the body already. what is actually the best budget prime lens for this camera that wont break the bank but still gives that nice blurry background and good low light performance?

Regarding what #1 said about "I totally feel your pain on this one...", I gotta jump in because going too cheap on a prime lens for street stuff can actually bite you. You gotta be careful with autofocus speed on a budget. Here is my breakdown of what you should look at:

  • Fujifilm XC 35mm f/3.5
  • Super cheap and tiny, but the build feels like toy plastic and you lose that fast aperture for low light.
  • TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 AF
  • Crazy affordable and pancake thin, though edge sharpness wide open is kinda soft and the af motor hunts occasionally.
  • Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR
  • Pricier, but weather sealed and optically much better if you can stretch the budget slightly. I would suggest skipping the ultra-budget manual lenses unless you really like zone focusing. Stick with something that has reliable autofocus for city walking.

Building on the earlier suggestion, you really gotta watch out for autofocus reliability when buying cheap glass for street work. Some of the third party options miss focus constantly when lighting drops, which ruins shots when you need them most. I would suggest looking at the Fujifilm XF 27mm f2.8 R WR if you can stretch your budget slightly, or stick to the TTArtisan 27mm f2.8 AF Fuji X if you need to stay strictly under three hundred. Just make sure whatever you grab has a reliable AF motor so you dont miss candid moments downtown. Reliability matters way more than saving twenty bucks imo.

I totally feel your pain on this one. Lugging heavy glass around all day gets old fast, and it honestly ruins the fun of shooting. When I switched to a compact prime setup last year, my shoulders finally stopped aching and I started actually bringing my camera everywhere again.

  • ditch the zoom weight
  • embrace the stealth factor Stick to a small prime and you'll love walking around the city again.
