honestly so done with this kit lens, its just way too soft at the edges for my Oregon hiking trip. my logic was the 15-45 would be fine but im just frustrated now.
Need something actually wide and sharp for my X-S20 on a $350 budget. What even exists that isnt garbage...
I totally feel your pain with that 15-45mm... it is basically a plastic toy and the edge softness is legendary for all the wrong reasons. Since you are heading to Oregon, you definitely want something that can handle those sweeping views without turning the trees into mush. For a $350 budget, you actually have a couple of solid options if you dont mind going third-party. I would suggest looking at these because they actually punch way above their weight class for technical sharpness:
- Samyang 12mm f2.0 NCS CS Manual Focus Fujifilm X Mount: This is kind of the gold standard for budget wide glass. Be careful tho, it is fully manual. But honestly, at 12mm, you just set it to f/5.6 and basically everything from three feet to infinity is in focus. The center resolution is crazy high, and the corners hold up way better than your kit lens ever could.
- TTArtisan 10mm f2.0 ASPH Ultra Wide Angle Fujifilm X Mount: If you want even wider for those massive landscapes, this one is surprisingly good for the price. Make sure to watch out for some slight vignetting and barrel distortion, but for the money, it is a steal. It is built like a tank compared to that Fuji kit lens. One thing to consider... you might want to look for a used Samyang AF 12mm f2.0 Fuji X Mount if you absolutely need autofocus. It usually goes for around $300 used. Just be careful with quality control on these third-party lenses; sometimes you get a decentered copy where one side is blurrier than the other. Make sure to test it against a flat wall as soon as it arrives.
