Honestly im just so fed up with dragging around this bag full of primes for my X-T5. I shoot mostly street photography and some occasional travel stuff but im currently in Chicago and the constant switching lenses is killing me. I missed like three perfect shots yesterday because I was fiddling with my 23mm when I should have been using something wider or with more reach. Its honestly exhausting and my back is killing me. I dont have a huge budget right now maybe around 800 bucks or so but I need a one-and-done solution before I head out on a trip next month. I keep looking at the 16-80mm but Ive read mixed reviews about the sharpness and im starting to get really annoyed by the whole process of picking gear. Is there actually one decent lens that covers everything without feeling like a brick attached to my camera? I just want to walk out the door and start shooting instead of playing lens tag all afternoon...
Stumbled upon this and totally get it. Swapping lenses while the moment passes is the worst. If you want something versatile that wont break your back, stay away from the 16-80mm if you care about sharpness. Check these out instead:
- Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS
- This is the kit lens but honestly its surprisingly sharp and super compact. You can find it used for way under your budget. Just be careful with the aperture ring, it can feel a bit loose.
- Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary
- This is basically the dream street lens. Its tiny, really sharp across the board, and having a constant f/2.8 is a life saver in dimmer alleys or indoor spots. Make sure to check if you really need that extra reach before grabbing something heavier. The Sigma is probably your best bet for travel imo.
Coming back to this since I saw your post. Honestly, the 16-80mm is a total letdown for the X-T5 sensor resolution, which is just a shame given the focal range. If you want sharpness without going broke, you really should look at the Sigma contemporary series. They offer way better optical performance for the price compared to the kit glass.

Its a bit chunkier than the Fuji glass but that constant f/2.8 aperture is a game changer for street stuff when the light drops. It handles sharpness way better than that kit zoom too. Its not tiny, but itll save your back by letting you leave the bag at home. Definitely worth a look before your trip.
