Im totally new to photography and just bought a used X-T5 but the lens it came with is confusing me. I have no idea what to look for and honestly feel kinda overwhelmed. I need something for:
- travel photos
- family stuff
- maybe 500 dollar budget
Should I just get a prime or zoom lens?
Re: Honestly, dont sweat it. When I started, I felt the exact same way. Totally agree with the previous reply about zooms being the way to go for starting out. Honestly, for travel and family, you just need something that stays on the camera so you dont miss the shot. If you want to stay near that 500 dollar mark, check these out:
- Fujifilm XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS
- This is the gold standard for kit lenses. It is super sharp, has great stabilization, and you can find them used all day for cheap.
- Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary
- This one is amazing. It is tiny, light, and gives you a constant aperture which is fantastic for family photos indoors!
Honestly, grab the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR prime. It is sharp, weather-resistant, and small enough to carry everywhere without any hassle. Super reliable for learning the basics.
Honestly, don't sweat it. When I started, I felt the exact same way. If you want one lens to handle travel and family shots without breaking the bank, a versatile zoom is usually the way to go.
- Look for a general purpose zoom from Fujifilm
- Stick to the kit range Honestly, just grabbing a decent zoom from Fujifilm will cover everything you need. You'll learn way more using that than obsessing over specs.
@Reply #2 - good point! But honestly, I think a prime lens might actually be safer for a beginner to learn focal lengths properly. Plus, you wont be tempted to just zoom out of laziness.
- check out reddit threads on beginner primes
- search youtube for fujifilm prime vs zoom comparisons
- look at the fuji lens roadmap page There is a massive video series about this, just search best fuji primes and its basically the first result.
