I finally upgraded to the X-T5 for the resolution but man, I didnt realize how much it would show the flaws in my older glass. Im heading to Japan in three weeks and honestly Im tearing my hair out trying to pick just ONE lens to keep on the body most of the time. Ive been shooting Fuji for like six years so I know the system, but this 40MP sensor is a different beast and my old 18-55mm just isnt cutting it anymore for those landscape shots in Kyoto. I need something that can handle everything from street stuff at night to wide mountain views without being a brick.
Here is what I am looking for specifically:
- Must be weather sealed because I always get caught in the rain
- Sharp enough to actually take advantage of the 40MP sensor
- Under $1000 if possible because the camera already broke the bank
- Not too heavy since Ill be walking like 15 miles a day
I was looking at the 16-80mm f4 but I keep hearing mixed things about the sharpness on the newer sensors and the 16-55mm 2.8 is just way too massive for a travel rig. Should I just bite the bullet and go for the 18-120mm or is that more of a video thing? Or maybe the 10-24mm? I dont know I feel like I am overthinking this and running out of time to order...
Honestly, that 40MP sensor is a blessing and a curse. I had issues with my old glass too once I upgraded. Unfortunately, the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR is pretty disappointing on the X-T5. The corner softness is real... it just doesnt resolve the detail you need for those big Kyoto landscapes. Its not as good as expected for a high-res body.
- Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR: Good range but the optics are unfortunately too soft for 40MP.
- Fujifilm XF 18-120mm f/4 LM PZ WR: Primarily for video. Stills feel like an afterthought and it lacks the micro-contrast you want.
- Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR: The only zoom that truly maximizes that sensor, even if its a brick. Shooting with soft glass on that body is basically like putting cheap tires on a Ferrari. Im around if you need more spec comparisons or help narrowing it down.
I totally agree about being careful with those older zooms. I once took a cheap lens to Iceland without testing it and half my shots were soft... it was a total disaster. Quick tip: definitely get a Hoya 72mm HD3 UV Filter for the Japan rain. You might want to consider the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR even if it stretches the budget; its heavy, but at least your photos will be sharp.
Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!
That 40MP sensor is definitely a double-edged sword. It really highlights every tiny imperfection in your glass. Since you're on a deadline for the Japan trip, I'd suggest being real careful about what you prioritize before buying anything new. A few red flags to keep in mind:
- Steer clear of power zooms for a trip like this. They feel super disconnected for stills and that slight lag when zooming can make you miss a fast moment in a busy street like Shinjuku.
- Dont rely 100% on weather sealing. Its a great insurance policy but Ive seen sealed lenses fog up in high humidity or fail in a proper downpour. Always bring a backup plan.
- Be wary of slower f/4 zooms for night shots. With that many pixels, you really want as much light as possible to avoid noise issues. Basically, dont trade too much image quality for convenience or you might regret it later when you see the files on a big screen... good luck in Japan tho.
Noted!
Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.
