Just snagged a new X-T5 for my Japan trip next month and I am so hyped! I need a one-lens setup though. Stuck between the classic 18-55 and the 16-80 f4 for that extra reach, but Ive heard mixed things about sharpness on the 40mp sensor. Budget is $800 max... which one is better for all-day street stuff?

I took my X-T5 to Tokyo last spring and honestly, i was super satisfied with how it performed. I did a ton of research into the MTF charts and resolving power for that 40mp sensor before leaving because I was worried about the older glass. The Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 R LM OIS actually holds up remarkably well if you stop it down just a tiny bit. I spent three days straight walking around Shinjuku and the light weight was a total lifesaver compared to the heavier zooms. Here is why I think you should go with the 18-55 over the 16-80 for your trip:

  • The Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 R LM OIS is only about 310g, which is way easier on your neck for all-day street shooting than the 440g weight of the 16-80.
  • That f/2.8 aperture at the wide end is huge for those neon night shots in Dotonbori. I found myself shooting at lower ISOs than my buddy who had an f/4 lens, which kept the files cleaner.
  • Sharpness at the center is surprisingly high. Even on the 40mp sensor, i noticed it resolves fine detail in the architecture better than the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f4 R OIS WR, which honestly gets a bit soft in the corners during my testing. I picked mine up for about $400 used, so it fits your $800 budget perfectly and leaves room for plenty of ramen. It just works well as a versatile kit for Japan and I have no complaints about the results.
