So I just bought the Fujifilm X-T5 because everyone said it was the best for travel but honestly I have no idea what I'm doing yet. I've mostly just used my iPhone for everything but I wanted better pictures for my trip to Tokyo and Kyoto in about seven weeks. The camera came with a small lens but I think I need something that can zoom in more for like buildings and stuff far away but also take nice photos of my kids at dinner.
I keep seeing all these numbers like 18-55 and 16-80 and 18-120 and it's honestly making my head spin. I dont want to carry around a huge bag of gear or keep switching pieces out while we are walking around because my wife will get annoyed if I'm constantly messing with the camera instead of looking at the sights. I just want one do it all lens that stays on the camera the whole time. My budget is probably under 1000 bucks if possible because the camera itself was already way more than I planned on spending.
Is there one specific zoom lens that is like the gold standard for this camera that isn't too heavy? I'm sorry if this is a total beginner question but I'm just really lost with all the options...

Quick tip tho: since your camera has 40 megapixels, you can crop photos later and they still look amazing. It basically gives you extra reach so you dont always need a massive lens!
Over the years, I've found that 40MP sensor to be technically demanding on optical resolving power. Before you buy, what kind of lighting are we talking about for those dinners? Dim restaurants often require the faster f/2.8 aperture of the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR to keep noise levels down. Is that extra weight worth better low-light performance, or is staying strictly under that 1000 dollar budget your main priority?
Congrats on picking up the X-T5! You are gonna have such an amazing time in Japan with that camera. Since you want one lens to do it all without driving your wife crazy with constant gear changes, you definitely want the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. It is basically the gold standard for travel on Fuji and fits your budget perfectly. Here is why I love it:
- The 16mm side is wide for buildings, while 80mm lets you zoom in on details way better than the small lens you have now.
- It has insane image stabilization which helps a ton for dinner shots of the kids when the light is low.
- It is pretty light and wont weigh you down while walking miles in Kyoto.
- Weather sealing is huge because it rains unexpectedly in Japan all the time! You are gonna get some fantastic photos with this setup. Have a blast!

I went to Kyoto a few years back and tried to bring a whole backpack of stuff and it was a total nightmare. You really have to be careful with the crowds in places like Gion or near the temples because people are just everywhere and its so easy to bump into someone or get your gear knocked. I actually almost dropped my camera once near the Fushimi Inari gates because some tourist with a giant selfie stick wasnt looking where they were going. Speaking of those gates, if you go, make sure you go early because the hike up is surprisingly long and I ended up getting way too hungry halfway through. We found this tiny spot that sold these little fox-shaped crackers and honestly they were the highlight of my day. I think I spent more time trying to find a specific vending machine that sold hot corn soup than actually taking photos of the architecture.
