so i just bit the bullet and bought a fujifilm x-t5 because i saw all these amazing photos on instagram and i am literally so hyped to start using it!! im going on a huge trip to Kyoto next month and i really want to capture everything but honestly im totally lost when it comes to the lenses. the guy at the shop mentioned prime lenses are sharper than the ones that zoom in and out but i have no idea where to even start because there are so many numbers on them like 23mm or 35mm or 50mm and i dont really get what the difference is. i mostly want to take pictures of the streets at night and maybe some close ups of food and my girlfriend when we are walking around. my budget is kinda tight now after buying the body so i can probably only spend about 500 bucks maybe 600 if i push it. i just want one lens that stays on the camera all the time and does everything well so i dont have to keep swapping them out and getting dust inside the camera which sounds scary. sorry if this is a really basic thing to ask but if you could only pick one single prime lens to use for everything on an x-t5 which one would it be?

I went through this exact same worry about sensor dust when I first started. Choosing the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR worked best for me for a few specific reasons:

  • The WR designation means weather resistance. It seals the mount.
  • Its much cheaper than the f/1.4 version. Fits your budget.
  • 23mm is wider than 35mm. Better for tight streets. Its been a reliable choice for me. Decent option.

Just saw this. ^ This. Also, the sealing works well for peace of mind. Are you mostly shooting landscapes or tighter stuff like portraits? Just curious...

Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.

In my experience, a 35mm focal length is the one I would pick if I could only have one. I've traveled all over with just that view and it never lets me down. But before I suggest a specific one for your trip, are you looking to capture wide shots of the temples, or are you more focused on those close-up food shots? Also, does the physical size of the lens matter much to you?
