What is the best all-around zoom lens for Fujifilm X-T5?

So I finally pulled the trigger on the X-T5 last week and man that 40mp sensor is no joke. I moved over from an old Sony setup because I wanted those Fuji colors but now I'm stuck trying to figure out which zoom to actually live with day to day. I'm heading to Japan for two weeks next month and I really only want to carry one lens if I can help it since I'm trying to pack light for once.

I've been looking at the XF 16-80mm f4 because that extra reach seems super useful for street stuff but I keep reading reviews saying it doesnt really hold up on the new high res sensor. Like its soft in the corners or something? Then there is the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 which is tiny and super sharp from what I've seen but I really love the aperture rings on the Fuji lenses so I feel like I'd miss that tactile feel. Also saw the 18-55mm kit lens for cheap used but it feels weird putting such an old lens on a brand new 40mp body... budget is around $700 max and I need to buy something before the trip. If I'm doing a mix of landscape and just random food/city shots which one is gonna give me the best balance? Is the 16-80 actually that bad or are people just being overly picky...

People are definitely being picky, but with 40mp, they kind of have a point. You might want to be careful with that 16-80 if you want absolute sharpness in the corners. I would suggest thinking about a few things first:

  • Do you plan on doing much shooting at night or in low light?
  • Is weather sealing a major priority for your trip? Make sure you test your copy before your flight so you dont have any regrets.
