honestly im so over this bulky zoom it just feels clunky for fast street stuff in chicago and i keep missing shots because it hunts way too much. ive got like 600 bucks saved for a new one before my trip next month. what is the best prime lens for Fujifilm X-T5 street photography?

In my experience shooting downtown for years, you gotta go small. Ive tried many setups, but the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR is king for fast street stuff. Its snappy and handles that X-T5 sensor perfectly.

  • 23mm f2: lightning fast AF and weather sealed.
  • Fujifilm Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR: tiny pancake size but slightly louder motor. Grab the 23mm, its way better for those tight Chicago alleys.

Just catching up on this thread. I've been shooting around the Loop for a few years and honestly, the grit and fast pace in Chicago can be tough on gear. I used to carry around really pricey glass but after a sketch encounter on the train, I started leaning toward more discreet, budget-friendly stuff. You might want to consider the risk of carrying something that looks too expensive if you're out late shooting. I would suggest being careful with some of the super cheap third-party options tho. I once bought a lens that felt solid but the autofocus was a nightmare in the shadows of the L tracks. For your X-T5, you need something that actually communicates well with the body and doesnt hunt in the dark.

  • Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X
  • Its crazy sharp for the price. Not weather sealed, but at half your budget, its a steal.
  • Viltrox AF 33mm f/1.4 XF
  • Very affordable alternative, tho build quality can feel a bit less premium than the Sigma.
  • Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X
  • If you want to stay further back from the action, this thing is tiny and incredibly sharp. Make sure to leave some cash for a decent strap or a protective filter. I've seen too many people scratch their front element trying to be fast in a crowd. Ngl, I still worry about my gear in certain neighborhoods, so having a lens that didnt cost a fortune gives me some peace of mind while shooting.

If youre rocking the X-T5 you really need to consider how the glass resolves that 40mp sensor. Most of the older primes just get a bit soft when you crop in. In my experience, the third-party market is actually crushing it lately. Ive tried many setups and the Sigma 23mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is basically the gold standard for street work right now. The MTF charts are impressive and it stays sharp across the frame even wide open. It hits right around 549 dollars so it fits your budget perfectly. No aperture ring tho, which is the only real dealbreaker for some fuji purists. The Viltrox AF 27mm f/1.2 Pro is another beast entirely. It resolves that high-res sensor better than almost anything else on the market. Tbh the CA control is top tier for a lens at this price point. Its a bit heavier than the Sigma, but if you want that creamy look while shooting under the L tracks at night, its hard to pass up. Both will way outperform your old zoom for speed and sharpness.

I spent years lugging heavy glass before realizing that being discreet is way more important for street work. I picked up a tiny manual prime and it totally changed my flow. It taught me that speed comes from how you use the gear, not just the autofocus.

  • use zone focusing to beat lag
  • keep it small to blend in
  • save that cash for travel Seriously, going cheap and manual improved my hit rate more than any expensive upgrade ever did.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Youre a lifesaver honestly.
