What is the best all-around lens for a Fujifilm X-T5?

I recently upgraded to the Fujifilm X-T5 and I’m blown away by the 40MP sensor, but I’m having a hard time picking a 'one-and-done' lens for daily use and travel. I want something versatile enough for street photography but capable of handling landscapes too. I’ve been looking at the XF 16-80mm f/4 for the constant aperture and reach, but I’m worried it might not be sharp enough for the high-res sensor. On the other hand, the XF 18-55mm is so compact but lacks weather sealing. If you had to pick just one lens to keep on your X-T5 most of the time, which one would it be?

In my experience shooting Fuji for a decade, i've wasted way too much cash chasing "perfect" glass... For ur X-T5, here's what I recommend for value: 1. Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X (~$499) - handles 40MP great and it's tiny.
2. Used Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS (~$325) - classic budget pick. Lesson learned: dont let sensor hype trick u into overspending! gl!

Yo! Seriously, I love that you upgraded to the Fujifilm X-T5 Mirrorless Digital Camera, its such an amazing piece of tech! I've been a pro Fuji shooter for years, and while that 40MP sensor is fantastic, it definitely demands high-quality glass to really shine. From a safety and reliability perspective—especially if you're traveling—you gotta prioritize weather sealing and build quality so you dont end up with a bricked camera in the middle of a trip. For your 'one-and-done' lens, I'm gonna recommend the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR. Honestly, it's the safest bet for that high-res sensor. Its built like a tank and the weather resistance is incredible. Ngl, it’s a bit heavier than the kit lenses, but when you're caught in a sudden downpour during a street session or hiking for a landscape shot, you’ll be so glad you have that pro-grade sealing. It basically guarantees you won't have to worry about moisture or dust getting into the internals. If you find the 16-55mm too bulky for daily carry, I'd suggest looking at the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR. It’s super compact, weather-sealed, and incredibly sharp on the X-T5. But for a zoom? Stick with the 16-55mm. It’s pretty much the only zoom that stays sharp edge-to-edge on that 40MP sensor without compromising on reliability. Anyway, hope that helps! You've got an amazing camera, just make sure you put the right glass on it to keep it safe and performing at its peak. Cheers!

Found this thread while looking at some MTF charts for the new sensor. That 40MP bayer array has a pixel pitch of about 3.04 microns, which is seriously demanding. I took my X-T5 to the coast last month and did some testing on the cliffs. The older lenses just turned the fine rock details into mush. If i had to pick just one for everything, it would be the Fujifilm XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR. It is wide enough for landscapes but fast enough for street at night. Plus, the linear motor keeps up with the X-T5s autofocus way better than the older stuff. If you absolutely need a zoom, the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR is basically the only one that resolves enough detail to justify the high-res sensor. It is heavy, but the optical quality is neutral and clinical in a good way. Its much better than the 16-80mm which gets pretty soft at the edges on the T5. Quick tips:

  • stick to lenses with the LM badge for the best AF performance on this body
  • avoid using small apertures like f/11 because diffraction kicks in earlier on the 40MP sensor

Been thinking about this for a few hours. Honestly, my experience with the X-T5 zooms has been pretty disappointing so far. I've had issues with the glass just not being as good as I expected once you start cropping into those 40MP files.

  • I think the older Fuji glass just isnt up to the task anymore, unfortunately. It shows every flaw.
  • Someone told me the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is actually a better bet for the high-res sensor, tho Im not sure if the size trade-off is worth it for daily use.
  • Not sure but I've heard the Fujifilm XF 18-120mm f4 LM PZ WR holds up surprisingly well, even if it feels more like a video lens.
  • IIRC, the list of lenses Fuji actually recommends for that sensor is super short and leaves out a lot of the fun lenses we used to love. Basically, it feels like the body is way ahead of the glass right now. Its a bit of a letdown when you want that one-and-done setup and everything feels like a compromise.

Saved for later, ty!

In my experience, that 40MP sensor is super picky. I actually had issues with the kit lens being way softer than I expected, which was a total bummer after spending so much on the body. If I had to pick just one, I'd go with the newer f2.8 pro zoom. * whats ur actual budget?
* is weight a big factor for u? tbh it's pricey but worth it for the sharpness. gl!

  • i would honestly just grab a fast 23mm prime and call it a day
  • it handles the resolution better and stays compact for daily carry or travel
  • i actually spent my afternoon trying to fix the strap lugs on my old film body with some epoxy
  • it turned into a huge mess because the glue started dripping onto my workbench
  • i ended up having to sand down the wood and now there is a permanent grey spot in the middle of my garage
  • my kid thought it was hilarious but i am still trying to scrub the residue off my hands
  • anyway lol i totally went off on a tangent there sorry
