I recently made the jump to the Fujifilm X-H2, and I am absolutely blown away by the detail from that new 40-megapixel sensor. However, it’s also been a bit of a wake-up call regarding my current glass. I’ve noticed that some of my older lenses that looked great on my 26MP bodies are showing their weaknesses now, especially when I’m pixel-peeping those distant treelines and rock textures in my landscape shots.
I’m on the hunt for the absolute sharpest lens possible to really take advantage of this high-resolution sensor. I mostly shoot wide-angle vistas and coastal scenes, so edge-to-edge sharpness is my top priority. I’ve been looking at the newer 'LM WR' primes like the XF 18mm f/1.4 or the XF 23mm f/1.4, as I’ve heard they were designed specifically with these high-res sensors in mind. That said, I do value the flexibility of a zoom when I'm hiking, but only if it doesn't mean sacrificing that crisp, biting detail at f/5.6 or f/8.
For those of you who have been using the X-H2 for landscape work, which lens in your bag consistently delivers the most detail? Is there a particular prime that stands out as the gold standard for sharpness right now, or is the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 still the king of the mountain?
Sooo saw this earlier but just getting around to replying now. If ur looking for that 40MP detail on a budget, honestly, you gotta look at the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. It's literally half the price of the Fuji 16-55mm (usually around $499) and lowkey just as sharp in the center. I've been super happy with it on my X-H2 for hiking cuz it's so light. If you're dead set on a prime but wanna save some cash, the Fujifilm XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR is a total steal. I mean, you can find them used for like $250-$300 all day long. It's plenty sharp stopped down to f/5.6 for those coastal shots you mentioned. Idk if it's the 'gold standard' compared to the $900 lenses, but for the price? It’s a no-brainer imo. peace 👍
Ok so i was scared too, but the Fujifilm XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR is way sharper than my zooms. Its super reliable, is that the one you meant? Ngl i love it!
Basically, high-res sensors show every flaw, so you gotta be careful with older glass. I would suggest the Fujifilm XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR because its newer optics and weather sealing offer the reliability you need for coastal shots. Its a safer bet to handle that 40MP detail without losing sharpness at the edges... just make sure the seal is tight!
